Did I play this right?, Palinya, 1. Oct 2003 09:35

The table is pretty loose... pretty standard for a low limit game

I am the very last spot in late position. I get a KK. 3 fold. Everyone else calls. I raise... this knocks out the blinds and 2 others so now there are 3 left on the table.

the flop comes AAA... The first 2 check, the third bets. I want to see if he really has it so I raise him. He calls... we also lose one of the other 2. At this point I think he probably has the last A but I call him to the river anyway thinking he could just as easily have KK - 99 (or even a single K or Q since it's fairly loose)

Was this worth paying the big bet on the turn and the river to see if he had it? I think it was but I'm not sure.

Oh yeah.. he had the A

No, I would let it go with the raise to the A overcard all day. AAA make you think the odds are less for the remaining Ace but why did the player call in the first place. He had the ace. He didn't reraise your informational bet because he knew it was just that. He sucked you in. Make the laydown. That's what makes you $$$$$. Not only winning bets, but saving bets. Those count just as much.

I was in mainly because A high is only one hand that he could have stayed in at. He could have had any other pocket pair. It was a loose table, he was in late position... It was fairly common for people to be in with KK-22. There were lots of hands he could have thought were winners not just the A.

I'm just thinking that if I had QQ - TT and I was in his position, I might have played it the same way he did. He was in 2nd to last position. If I was holding QQ in second to last position with that flop, I'm not sure if I would have played the hand differently than he did... and I had seen him play worse pocket pairs in earlier positions.

Your raise on the flop is fine, but it's not going to get you any information. Surely you don't expect someone with an ace to reraise you here. However, by raising you may get someone with an ace to slowplay you now until the river, which could save you a bet along the way. Someone either has the case ace or you have the best hand. Since it isn't always out there, you need to take this one to showdown. If you're real concerned about quads, you can just call a bet bet on the turn or river. This lets an inferior hand continue when they are probably drawing dead.

I would have bet the flop and check called to the river if he called my bet. There is about a 20% no one has an Ace.

My opinion and may not be right.

I like the raise. If he has the Ace he may check the turn going for the check raise, which you won't give him. When you check the turn your call on the river is much better as you have invited the bluff in the case he doesn't have it and would not have called another bet.

This tactic is good for a lot of similar situations.

imo

Your opponent was either totally stupid, or incredibly savvy. Why would anyone bet if he flopped 4 aces? You did not say whether he raised back after your raise, and what he did on the turn and river, so it is difficult to know whether you played correctly or not.
