Limit Tourney -- Play Hand or Not, epper, 1. Oct 2003 09:07

Playing a $50+5 Limit Hold Em Tourney online. There are around 60/171 left and I am a little below the average. Have not seen a hand in a while and we are at $300/600. A call to me when i am three from the big blind. I have A2s p. Think about folding, but see players so feel that if it hits, can get action. Wrong b/c draw hand late in a tourney? Anway, 5 players, and flop comes 8d, Js, Qs. Small blind bets, big blind raises, i call, small reraises, big rereraises, and i call an additional 2 bets. turn is no help, and it is two bets again, i call and am down to $235. river is no help. should i have thrown the hand away when it became two bets after the flop, never played it? help please! ty

At a full table with lots of people in the hand, I would calling in a blind spot (if it was only 1 bet)... If the hand didn't hit after the flop and you have to pay to see more cards - definately throw it away.

IMO, i would definitely not have played that hand. If i was a blind, just like trwebb said, than i would consider it depending on the players (Wild-Aggressive). Reason I would not play the hand is bc i think you said there were 5 players in it before the flop, than after flop only you, SB and BB. If thats what you meant, 5 players already wanting to see the flop, which means they must have a better hand or better kicker. So i would have not even considered playing the hand..i would let everyone else duke it out, lose there money and wait for the better hand.
If you meant that it was only you, BB and SB before the flop. Than i could understand why you played the hand thinking that they were trying to steal the blinds etc. Once again, probably wouldnt have played the hand, but if a flush draw didnt hit on the flop, i would have definitely folded. No reason to push more money in with nothing!!
As stated before, wait for the good hands, let everyone else run each other out until you get your hand.

The more that I think about it, I AGREE. I had played aggressive and tight the entire tourney and was around 6 at the 1 hour break. Cards were not coming and I played it. Stupid as it is a drawing hand in early position. At that point, limping in is probably not smart. I got what I deserved -- stuck in a bad situation. That late in the tourney, I should have been waiting for a good hand. Frustrated, and should have known better. I am still relatively new to the game and tourneys. Appreciate the help, and would appreciate more comments. THANX

I'm a major newbie here, but I will tell you this: as I look over my tournament mistakes -they're all chasing draws. I let my stack bleed chasing draws far too much. It's far worse a proposition in NL, since anyone sensing you're on a draw will make it really expensive to see that next card.

Once I noticed this trend, I started getting in the money. But old habits die hard and I drift back sometimes. Too tempting. Gotta be disciplined.

Excellent point A. I am new to the game (May), but I should know better. In early position, the A2 s was too loose a hand to play with blinds at 3/600. Gotta be thinking tight in early position once we get that deep into the tourney. 60 players or so were left out of 171, and I should have been patient. One big hand and I would be above average. I learned my lesson, and all of the comments were very helpful. Thanx.
