Many players consistently put their whole bankroll on the line when they play...sooner or later they will run bad and get broke.

But, if you are on limited money, it is often correct to take a shot with your whole bankroll if that shot has a chance to change your life.

If you see a big game that is live and you have a shot to win enough money to change your life, but it takes all your bankroll to take that shot, you are correct in taking that shot assuming the chance of you hitting a large score is viable.

If you have a huge bankroll...Taking such a shot will be in error! you risk too much for too little gain.

SkyTurtle says" Roy, I like and try to live that Maxim - Put it all on the line- most of the time. I am 34 and have a LARGE amount of cash, six figures ++, and play local 15/30 games for profit. Own a Contracting Corp, where we competive bid most of out work. Bids up to 5 Million dollars. Talk about putting it on the line. What makes me think I can do that project cheaper than 8 others guys? And when I get one, what did I miss? UGH. So with poker I get that rush, that indefinable high at a much lower risk level. That is what poker does for me. I often think of those 300/600 ++ games going on down on the Strip, and wonder if that high would be magnified. Part of my enjoyment now is in beating the game. What happens at these higher levels. Stress is not a problem--5 million $$ bids remember--- Bankroll is not a problem, my face to face skills are well tested in business as well as the tables. I don't currently need $$$. "Put it all on the line" . I'll get in the big money game at some point. Roy, what is there for me?

Since you don't need the $$$ I have the perfect solution. You should give me enough cash to play in that game (plus expenses of course) and then I will be able to give you an accurate answer to your question.

Hey Roy-

It's funny, that is EXACTLY what I have been considering recently. I normally play LL (3/6, 4/8 and 6/12), but my B&M also spreads 20/40, 40/80 and 80/160 games. I watch these games frequently, and there are many times when I know I could be making some serious money at one of them.

Anyway, my bankroll is not THAT big, but I have recently decided that as soon as I have enough money that I feel comfortable with it (not that far off), I will sit down at the best game with all of it.

I think it's really an easy decision for me tho because, a) I am not a pro and make a good living at my day job, b) my entire bankroll right now is winnings (I have already taken my original investment back out of it and I play only with other people's money), and c) if I lose it all, it's easy for me to re-invest my own seed money to start over.

Anyway, thanx for the post, it's nice to know my thinking is not just crazy. :)

If you want to test out your play, this is what I've done. I will go sit at my regular 5/10 table and if I'm playing well and get up about $200 I will switch to the 10/20 table for practice and experience. That way I'm not risking more than I initially wanted to but I'm still playing at a bigger game. Which means sometimes I exchange profit for experience.

Hey MOZ! I've seen what I assume is your usual B&M. I wish I lived nearby. (See my "first B&M play" post for a description.)

If the tables are usually as soft as the table I played, you should be making some money there. I imagine the higher limits are a little tougher, but I've worked much harder to win at $1-2 UB tables, or even $0.50-$1, than there.

You have a beautiful area of the world to live in, and a smoke-free poker room to fish in. What a life!

hmm... it really depends on when you play. Friday and Satureday nights are VERY soft at the 3/6 and 4/8 games. They start getting tougher from 6/12 and up. If you play at all during the week (I usually play on Tuesday nights) it is much tougher than on the weekends.

This is a beautiful place to live, and the best time of year is coming up soon! :) As a smoker, I kinda wish I could still smoke at the tables (going non is a recent development) but it is really quick and easy to get to an area where I can smoke without missing much action, so I think I'm all good with it. The tourneys have always been NS anyway, so I was kinda used to it.

Hey beigs-

CAZ is in Scottsdale, which will be about a two or two and a half hour drive. I don't know much about what is around Tucson, you might find some decent action there too...

If you decide to come up this way, let me know and I will try to catch up with you.

beigs...there are 2 poker rooms here in Tucson...Desert Diamond Casino on Old Nogales Highway...and Casino Del Sol on west Valencia road. I play mainly at Desert Diamond...during the week mainly beatable 3-6 hold-em sometimes a soft 6-12 will get going... on weekends there's usually alot of action 10-20 and once in a while a 15-30 or 20-40. If its tournys you're looking for Casino del Sol has tournys almost every day of the week...Desert Diamond discontinued their tournments at the end of August right before the card room changed locations...they are talking about starting tournaments again, but have not announced a definate date yet....hope this helps.

Hey Moz, that is now YOUR money! I'm not saying don't take your shot, but be careful not to get into a frame of mind where you don't mind losing your money because you think of it as someone elses.

Here I go again with the inflammatory headlines, LOL :)

Roy,

Love ya...But I think this is terrible advice in almost all situations. The statement "it is often correct to take a shot with your whole bankroll if that shot has a chance to change your life" is only true IF YOUR GOAL IN PLAYING POKER IS TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE (financially).

If your goal is to have a good time, pick up a few extra bucks here and there, and stay mentally sharp by practicing an intellectually challenging hobby, this advice is bad, bad, bad.

What's more, I'd suggest that if a player thinks "this session could change my life" everytime he/she steps into a casino, it may indicate the presence of a serious problem...

Sorry to sound like such a scrooge! But it makes me wince whenever I hear players at casinos talking about winning "it all" and changing their lives through one big session.

You pros know better than anyone...those are usually the same folks who lose their bankrolls...and often much more.

If you could replace your bankroll completely through some other source of income than taking a shot like this isn't bad at all. If you feel you are a winning player than giving your bankroll a chance at having a "catapult" start could be a great thing with huge pay offs in the future.

If, for instance, a single night could take your bankroll from just big enough to handle a 2-4 game to big enough to handle 5-10 or 10-20(and you feel that you'd win there) then I think you definitely should take some shots at it.

The key is to take a responsible shot. Most of the people you hear talking about "making it big" are slots or lottery players.

This was my take on his post and I think it is very sound advice.

I agree,
A little less than a month ago, I posted looking for advice as to whether I should try the 3/6 and 5/10 games event though I've pretty much stuck to 1/2(although I've played for about 3 years). The majority of posts suggested I wait until I had 300 BB....

Well, it's 3 weeks later and my $400 Bankroll is now $4200. I could have easily funded my $400 BR from outside sources had I lost, and by not waiting I am now averaging $200+ a day instead of ~$50.

I think this is the type of situation Roy is talking about. I don't plan on moving up in limits again anytime soon, I play 10/20 online occasionally when I see a fish sit down, but I wouldn't want to play 15/30 or 20/40 online...

Someday when I have more B+M experience under my belt, and I see a game I think I can beat, I will definately risk all of whatever my current bankroll is for a chance to be able to permanently sit at the next level...
