rebuy tournaments: Should I Add-on?, kurosawa, 1. Oct 2003 07:04

End of the first hour, i'm in 19th position out of 54 players with 4200 chips. Should I spend another $10 for 1000 more chips? What if I only had 1000 chips? What if I had 8000?

I'm in the habit of never adding on, mostly because I just like the purity of making it to the final table with a single entrance fee while suckers all around me are paying 4 or 5 times. But maybe this is a mistake?

there is a correct mathematical answer. You need to muliply the different payouts to the increased % you feel the additional buy in will help you reach these winnings and then add the results together. This will give the EV of an add on. If its greater than $10 you should buy in, if its not then you shouldn't.

A more advanced formula would be to also include the % decrease in reaching the money not adding on would produce. ie you have to consider the effect of the players who do buy in to your chances of making the money.
