Time of day & better or worse opponents?, NCD, 1. Oct 2003 00:22

I'm beginning to be convinced that the time of day I play has a lot to do with my results. It seems that in the early afternoons (Eastern US time) are great but that things stiffen considerably in the late evenings.

I won 3 $10 single table tourneys in a row, went out at 5PM Eastern to run some errands and saw a movie (Underworld) then sat back down around 11PM and could do nothing right. I lost around $90, mostly tourney entry fees since I didn't even place in 2 $30 tourneys and a $10. But even at the cash tables, it was a striggle to get even a little going and I took two serious beats that, well I figure those were expected. Normally I can recover pretty well after a beat, but not this time because the opponents were sharper than I usually see.

Has anyone noticed or tracked the type of players one is likely to encounter depending on the time of day? I'm wondering if it's not more housewives during the US daylight hours and then in the evening everyone comes out, including the disciplined amateurs.

What have you all noticed?

I usually only can play from 4pm to 11:30pm on the weekdays and any time on the weekends.

On weekday, I have noticed that I do best after 9pm to about 11pm. Wednesday is my most profitable night. I have played a few SnGs when I get of work at 4pm and have mixed results. Ran into a few tight tables in this time period. Things loosen up nicely for me around 9pm.

For the weekend, Saturday am to 6pm I try to avoid. I can't remember many wins during this time period. Same for Sunday. Again after 9pm on these days seems to be my "prime time."

I have found the best Tournament start times are Friday between 12AM and 3AM. It seems like there are many more chances to double up/ knock people out for the first hour or so. I think it's the Friday night after work drink/ get home/ play poker syndrome. I have gotten to the money the last 5 Fridays including 1 1st, a 2nd, and a 5th.

I have experienced good fishing on UB on Sunday mornings before noon, it's been pretty consistent.

I have difficulty on weeknights - but I don't know if it's due to the level of play or the fact that I'm usually only playing for an hour or two and my concentration isn't as keen.......a problem I am working toward solving!!

Ok, we seem to be pretty well spread out on our days, times and what online casinos we use so maybe we can share this info without butting heads too often.... plus games start so fast at $30 and under we could be playing the same game at the same time and never see each other because we grab games 5 minutes apart.

I suggest we use this thread as a clearing house for day/time suggestions to maximize out profits.

I've only been playing online for a week, but so far Wed and Thurs were good to me, Fri sucked, Sat was good and Sun I was even... all of Monday & Tues early afternoon I ruled the world but late Tues night I got crucified everywhere I turned.

Does this correspond to anyone else's experience?

I'm one of your "disciplined amateurs." Can only play later evenings week nights and some on weekends. Me and my homies don't take kindly to yous carpetbaggers. ;^)

I have a theory about week day afternoons... people playing poker while "working". I have found my strongest game is either in the afternoon on weekdays or for some reason I woke up at 4am or 5am EST and can come and clean up the people that have been up all night. It really has amazed me what being fresh, sipping coffee, and kicking ass in poker have in common. I'm not a morning person by nature, but really like it when my sleep schedule is screwed up like this.
