How to play the hand, AJones, 30. Sep 2003 16:56 | ||

| I have a question for everyone about what to do with a hand. I am playing a nl shorthanded cash game and i am in the sb with Kc 6c. It is folded around to me and I call. The guy in the big blind, who has been playing very loose and bluffing quite a bit checks and the flop is 9c 2h Ac. I bet the pot and he calls. The turn is 9d. I check it to him and he bets the minimum and i call. River is 5c. I bet $6 into a pot of about half of that and he makes it $15. Now my question is what to do now, should i call it or can i come back at him with a reraise? My thoughts were that he may too have been on the flush draw but if he has a full house then i am going to lose quite a bit. Any insight on this would be appreciated. Thanks. Andrew | ||

| call. unless his minimum bet on the turn was a bet to induce u to call when he hit a house, i would guess he has a set of nines instead of a house. but since calling fifteen bucks is not a bad pot if he doesnt have the house, i really wouldnt re raise here. but it really really depends on the player and my read of his play up until that point. if i felt he overplays his hands i would be more likely to re raise in that spot. and the reverse if he was a tough customer, i might even fold (but not likely) on 30. | The right play here depends on two main issues: what you know of your opponent, and yours and his respective stack sizes. If your opponent is one who will overplay hands and then not be able to come off them, raising him may be the right play (it won't do you much good to throw in a big reraise here if your opponent is capable of laying down a smaller flush - he'll either fold or show you a full house). All things being equal, I tend to favor just calling in this spot more often than reraising - having some knowledge of your opponnent is very helpful here, though. Stack sizes are a key component of your decision, too. If the $15 he has raised it to on the end represents a significant percentage of either yours or his chips, I would be more inclined to raise with your hand. Say your opponent makes it $15, but only has $10 left. Now, if you raise his last $10, he cannot reraise you with a full house, so your negative exposure is quite limited. Same goes if you can go all in for a bit more than his $15 bet. If you both have plenty of chips, though, your raise is far more dangerous. You might make a healthy raise, and then he might move all-in. Now, you're in a tough spot (folding is likely your best option if this happens, but some players will shove it all in with a small flush here, so the element of uncertainty is present). You can avoid this by just calling. Its always dangerous when you reopen the betting in no-limit, so the value of making an extra few bucks with a raise isn't as great as it is in limit poker. If he's a really live player who's willing to call big bets with lots of hands, though, by all means take a shot and make that big reraise - this may be the opportunity you've been waiting all night for.
