Short handed PP, WilliamS, 30. Sep 2003 07:47

I am struggling with how to play small PP in short handed online games (6 players and less). Obviously, there isn't going to be the 7:1 odds in the pot, but in short handed games the value of a made hand has to go up.
I find myself seeing flops with these hands and then being pushed off of them by a single bet. I think I'll start folding them in early position and possibly playing them aggressively in late position with no raises in front.
Obviously, I am talking in generalities here and every game is different, but I would like to hear some of you guy's thoughts on this subject.

my only thoughts are I think small PP's are overplayed by most. however, im addicated to them but usually just fold to a bet without hitting the set on the flop. i wont call 3 bets preflop with it, and i see a lot of players do this. limping in is cool obviously, but its an easy laydown to lots of action.

You are right that these hands go up in value in a short-handed game. You do have to be careful of overcards on the flop. There's a couple ways you can handle them; they are not necessarily *correct* and certainly not the way to do it every time, but here they are anyway:

1- you have a medium/small pp in LP. You get to see action before you have to act. If there is more than one overcard on the flop, and any action ahead of you, it's probably a good idea to fold. If there is no action ahead of you, then bet at it. If anyone calls, you need to be careful again on the turn. If the flop is rags and uncoordinated, sometimes even only one overcard, play it fast.

2- you have a medium/small pp in EP/MP with two or more overcards, most times check/fold. Occasionally, you can bet at it for information. This will sometimes buy you the pot right there. With an uncoordinated board of rags, bet at it.

Keep in mind, if the overcard(s) are lower than T, it's a pretty good bet you are good. The other players are most likely on bigger cards. Also, if the overcard pairs (a flop like QQ3, and you have 66) it is much less likely any of them have a Q, because of 2 on the board.

Anyhoo, that's just some random thoughts on the topic.
