Bust Out Bad Beat, Eric, 29. Sep 2003 22:38 | ||

| I was playing on Party with the last of my money (about $50) and a few hands in I get dealt 6 6. I limp and the flop comes 6 9 Q rainbow. Middle position guy raises $4 and I re-raise all-in. Everyone folds except MP calls. Turn is a blank and the river is... a Q. Sweet, I have a full house. But wait, MP turns over a Q 6 off suit. Hmm... he had 2 outs in the entire deck and thats if someone didnt fold a Q. I calculated the odds on a poker program I have and I was over a 100 to 1 favorite for the hand. So as my precious money slid over to his name a fealing of disgust rose in my stomach. Normally I would accept this hand as a VERY bad beat... and a rare one at that... but in the past month I have had over 20 hands where I have been sucked out on with huge pots where my opponent had less than a 10% chance of odds to catch. So.. as I pondered why anyone would ever call even the blind with a Q 6 off suit I realized I hated the game of poker. I hate it because I am used to playing sports like basketball and football where skill prevails. I kept telling myself in the long run my skill in poker would prevail.. but luck is just to big of a factor. And for all you fish out there who call with a Q 6 off suit preflop and win more than you should SCREW YOU. | ||

| While you did get sucked out again, there were plenty of hands that could beat you and I think your all-in bet was a stretch. First of all, you had the third best hand on the flop (99 and QQ are better). As unlikely as it is that someone has an overset, it does happen. In many situations with an observant player I think they would fold to your all-in if they didn't have a hand. But in what I can only assume is low-limit here, players aren't observant and many times don't know a real hand from one that should be mucked. In this case your opponent flopped 2 pair, which, with a rainbow flop isn't a bad hand. I probably wouldn't have called the all-in, but it wasn't that bad a call. Especially if he saw you play/overbet a weaker hand or two along the way. And I don't know what program you're using, but once that flop hits you're just a little better than 10 to 1 favorite, not 100 to 1. Skill will prevail in poker in the long run, but just like in any sport luck is a factor as well. In football a kickoff can bounce weird and bounce off the return man causing a turnover. In basketball a player can slip into another causing a foul and giving the other team 2 free foul shots. But, the more you learn and improve your game, the less luck will be a factor. | ||

| I must say that is bad luck, however he ahd two pair on a rainbow flop. Hard to fold. If the hand wasn't raised preflop I can go ahead and eliminate QQ and 99 from your hand as most everyone would raise those hands to get the blinds out. So that leaves him with you betting 66 or Q9 or AQ or 10J? He has a Q and a 6 the chances of you having the other 2 6's are rather slim. So He really can't peg you off on 66. AQ would of raised the flop most probably so I take you off of that. That leaves you with Q9 which is what I would of read. Top two pair, I would of mucked but if you expect a weak player to go through this whole process of elimnating hands you crazy which is why you will win in the long run. I find that bad beats come in bunches and I have a feeling you experienced a few in a row. You keep playing odds and percentages overtime you will win. | ||
