Recently, I played in an informal tounament and a situation arised which I did not know how to resolve. During a hand of No Limit Texas Hold'em a dealer/player accidently picked up the hole cards of another player and threw them into the trash pile. The player whose cards were removed did not realize his cards were missing until the next card, River, came up and he wanted to go All In. Naturaly, once he realized the mistake he called attention to the dealer/player, who had already folded. The player secretly told the dealer what his two hole cards were and they were found in the deck. Had the hand been played out the player who lost his cards would have won. We had never dealt with this problem so we determined that the player who lost his cards was at fault because he was responsible for his cards. In turn the second place finisher of the hand generously agreed to split the pot and move on with the game. Other than not having dealers/players any suggestions how we could have resolved this issue?

Thanks

This was a very gracious way for a bunch of friends to resolve the situation; obvoiusly you all trust each other.

Here's how it would really work in a card room: the guy whose hand got mucked is out of the hand. You see, it's each player's responsibility to protect their hands. Most will put a chip on them, or some other inanimate object. If this happened in a card room, the other guy would be awarded the pot.
