tough laydown - right move?, Andrew W, 29. Sep 2003 14:15

I made what I thought was a hard laydown. I even showed my cards. That prompted someone at the table who wasnt in the hand to question my play - as I defended it, he admitted he didn't notice the flush draw. What do you all think? (15 minutes later, I'm back up to over 3k, and the guy who won the pot is gone, not that it matters)

Hand #468266-79 at Mon4pmNL-04 (No Limit tournament Hold'em)

I don't know if the laydown was the right move (I think that would depend on a lot of circumstances about your opponents and how the game has gone), but I do question showing the laydown. Do you know why you showed your cards? You might have a very good reason for doing so, but I think in general that's not a good idea.

First, you are showing that you can make a tough laydown. This will encourage people to be bluffing at you in the future with scary boards. I think it might make it harder for you to know where your opponents are at later in the game. And if your read was right, you're also telling that other player that you read him well. This may get him to play better against you later, which is also bad for you.

But like I said, you may have had a good reason for showing those cards.

Hmmm, with what you pointed out, I had NO good reason to show cards. In both cases, I lose out with that player. I didn't really think it through, just ego I guess. I think I will just decide to never show unless I think I will get a real benefit from it.

bad laydown. but worse is the small bet of 180 on a flopped str witha 4 flush on zee board. i would charge more if he is going for flush. ive seen jackstraw play and he is good, and i think if it was bigger bet u win right there. if he call then u are probably a fav there,,,,,but if u were slow playing.... the non nut is not a good idea, u should be happy to pick up a small pot with 8-5.
