Limit Vs. NL Hold 'Em, NCD, 28. Sep 2003 23:02 | ||

| All in all, I like NL Hold 'Em... but it's a completely different world when using aggression and dealing with it from others in NL than in limit. In NL, intimidation can be the weapon of choice and I win a great many pots by betting the pot when 3 others have checked before me... which is almost never really a bluff because I have something to have gotten that far to begin with. My question is this: Is there any sort of set guidelines about betting, calling and raising in NL as there is in limit or is it simply a matter of reading the opponent and playing your instinct... instinct of self preservation or killer instinct, depending on the situation. At the moment, I'm flying by the seat of my pants... and want to learn to do better. NCD | ||

| Hi. The basic issue is that in NL, you can decide what pot odds you want to offer your opponent (and he can do that for you). So a real understanding of what hands you hands your opponent might be holding, what the odds are of his making one to beat you, and what you need to bet to make it incorrect for him to call (but maybe still enticing) is a skill and factor that does not happen in limit.. Another factor is that the implied odds include every chip on your or his stack, and you need to be able to calculate this to make the best decisions. So it is far from instinct and reading. They are important, of course, but poker math still dominates the thinking of most expert NL players. BarryT | ||

| Thanks, I'm starting to do well in single table NL tournaments with two seconds, a third and a win in my first seven tournaments (all $5 or $10 buy-in). But that style seems too loose for the $ tables... but at the $25 buy in money tables I'm going up and down $75 or so every day and ending up even. The biggest leak seems to be when I get beat or caught bluffing when things didn't develop... but these are often the same hands that provide good wins too. Things seem to be evening out and I am looking for any small tips that could give me a consistant positive momentum. Am I reading things wrong or should it be possible to do $100-$200 a day at $25 buy-in NL tables if you leave the table at the right time and then join another with a $25 buy-in... essentially depositing everything you had over $25 into your account where it can't be risked and so lost? I don't think that would hurt your offensive ability at those tables much since all-ins are often in the $10-$15 range, but I may be misreading this. NCD | ||

| Good reading and instincts are super important in NL. Knowing the range of hands your opponent may hold and his propensity to call/fold to a given amount of money bet is key....The guidelines of what/when to bet are in the formula of what price is the situation laying your opponent(s) and yourself and what action will your opponent take in a given situation with any of the hands he may hold.
