Did I charge enough for my seat?, Mark Gregorich, 28. Sep 2003 21:37

An unusual occurrence in part caused me to leave a good $60-120 hold'em game at Bellagio a few days ago. The player who was first up offered to pay me to leave the game. We negotiated a price, and I eventually accepted his offer.

The background on the game: There was one extremely weak player in the game with lots of chips and no intention of leaving. I had good position on him (2 seats to his left), so this increased the value of the game for me. However, the rest of the field was pretty solid, with one exception (who appeared to be about ready to quit). I was running good, and the rest of the players were avoiding me, so I got to play most of my pots heads-up against the all-star. The players waiting for the game were all tough players, so the game didn't figure to improve.

A few intangibles figured into my decision: I wasn't in the mood to play, and I wanted to go home and see my kids for a couple hours before they went to bed (it was about 6:30 pm). Had I felt like playing, I wouldn't have seriously considered an offer to give up my seat, as I felt my time in the game was worth quite a bit.

I told David (the player who was first up) that I would leave for $300, he countered with an offer of $200, and we settled on $240. I felt the game was worth about a bet an hour to me, so he basically paid me for two hours of playing to quit early. However, I gave up my expectation from 8:30 pm until whenever by taking his offer. So, I felt I cost myself money by accepting the $240. It didn't bother me too much, though, as I was happy to quit the game, and I had been playing for 7 and a half hours already and was starting to get a bit tired (so maybe the next few hours weren't worth a bet an hour to me after all). Plus, my kids are worth going home early for.

I think this is really a personal decision. Do you feel that what you gave up is worth what you made in contrast? If it were me, and I were playing 60/120 (hard to imagine, keep that in mind I usually play 5/10 at MOST) and someone offered me 2+ hours wage for a seat that I didn't feel like playing much anymore anyway, I'd have to take it. But, do you feel happy with the deal Mark? I think that is the key question.

David isn't necessarily going to get your position with respect to the live one, as anyone else in the game could immediately move into your seat. The player who you noticed acting like he was ready to leave soon, would make a seat available to David anyway. Therefore I think David could have gotten the worst of your bargain. Since you might not have stayed longer anyway, to compromise on the price seems fair.

I think you got a GREAT deal, if the chance of you leaving was greater than 30% or so.

If he waits and gets the other player's seat and you leave, you get nothing. One live player leaving, to be replaced by a better? player, and you get paid to leave when you're thinking about it anyway?

Good opening bid, good deal IMO.

It sounds like you got a sweet deal. The right price is unique to every individual and their indifference curve. It's hard to put a price on everything; in the time it took you to write this post you theoretically lost maybe twenty bucks. $240 sounds like a lot to us low-rollers but I guess it's similar to $40 for leaving a $10-20 game.

Hey Mark.

I think you got a pretty sweet deal there! Even though things were going well for you, you did put in 7 hours already, you were getting a bit tired, and you really weren't in the mood to play anymore.....anyway. Not to mention that you really wanted to be with your kids, too. They sound like good enough reasons to me to leave, whether you get paid for leaving, or not. David was first up and you mentioned that you thought a player was going to quit the game anyway, so I think his offer to you was great. It's how 'you' feel about giving up the seat. Sometimes triple that amount wouldn't be enough.....but in this case, I think you made a wise decision by leaving.... and you got paid for it, too! The game will always be there tomorrow, and being at your absolute best is when you want to be there. (you know that!). So you made some money for the day, and you got the chance to go home and be with your kids........."Man, you *are* a lucky guy"!

Price of seat - $240
Time with Kids - Priceless

Look at the $240 as a bonus, you made out well.

Hi. You did well. While you lose expectation in THAT game, you still have the two hours. You could have decided to play a different game, if you wished, and pick up still more expectation.

By the way, a true asshole would have taken the deal, and then tried to talk the live one into starting a new game (Omaha? Triple draw? $100-200?).

Hi Mark

I like your side! A free two hours wages without working. It also has good value to him also by the fact that he got a seat AND got you (I am sure you were the best player in the game) out of the game. Seems like a win/win situation.
