the flop [ 3d, 5d, 6c ]
turn [ 2d ]
River [ 4s ]
Ok my question is : If my opponent has pocket 4's would the pot have been divided?

Yes, you must both play the best 5-card hand. In this case, that is the str8 that appears on the board: it's better than his set and better than your pair.

smart of you to bet it. Sometimes in multiple-player pots, you can bet or raise and drive out one or more players, thus increasing your share of a split pot when the best hand is on board (sometimes, even when the board hand can't be beaten!)

Yes, it would have been a split pot, and you were very lucky to have rivered the four--your opponent already had his straight, while you had only a pair of fives and a gut-shot draw.
