NL cash games with an ante, chasepoker, 26. Sep 2003 20:27

i have just got home from a NL cash game that was played with an ante as well as the blinds ( ante 50p blinds £3/5 ) . I had never played in a NL cash game with an ante and at first struggled to keep up with the pace of the game. Eventually i found my feet and did ok but i would interested to know how much people think you need to loosen up. The table was split about 50/50 between people who had played quite a bit and those who had not much NL experience. I found myself being too loose early on and getting punished and then as i got tighter i started to do a lot better as i found everyone else to be playing too loose.

I presumed the correct strategy for an anted game would be to be loose but is this not so important as the game was NL ? I know it depends on how others are playing but can anyone offer any advice on how you need to change your strategy for this structure ?
Cheers
CP

Hey chase-

How much you need to loosen up is really a function of the size of the ante vs. how much $$ you have. If you have 5000 antes, you can play tight, but if you only have 100, you have to get involved in a lot of pots and do it very aggressively, taking down every and any pot you can.

First time poster here. So bear with me.

In a tournament game where you need the extra antes and the blinds/antes are high relative to stack size, you need to get in there and gamble it up and be extremely aggressive. Now in a cash game, you can always leave or get more chips(if possible) between hands, so your stack size in a cash game is not nearly as important. Some people like to play with a short stack so they can see if someone is bluffing, and others like to have a large stack so that they can bluff or get paid off when they have the goods.

How the antes change the game is that they increase how aggressive you should be overall. The amount of aggressiveness is based on how large the antes are to the blind size, how many players there are, and your position. Basically, it increases the number of times you should try to steal the antes/blinds. There are some very good discussions about this in "Theory of Poker" and "Supersystem". I don't think any of them mention NL directly, but some of the same principles apply.
