| Is it at all possible to be amazing at tournaments and terrible at ring games. I've been playing freeroll tournaments and I do very well in them but in ring games I can't seem to hack it. Could anyone give me a reason why this is happening. | ||

| Hey FUTR- I find that happens to me as well. When I'm focussing on, and doing well in tourney play, my ring game play really suffers. When I'm focussed on ring game play, my tourney play suffers. I tend to think that it's becaus eI use a different set of skills/tactics/strategies for each, and when I'm accustomed to using one set it's difficult to switch to the other. -Moz "You can see your reflection in the luminescent dash." | ||

| Sure it's possible. The skill sets to succeed in tourneys are completely different than those required to do well in cash games. You'll find top tournament pros who don't do well at all in cash games, and cash game winners who don't have much success in tourneys. You'll also find players who like one but not the other. It shouldn't surprise you that you do well in one but not the other. Lou Krieger Host at Royal Vegas Poker | ||

| The one thing i would say though is you need to be able to hold your own in ring games before you will be good at tournaments as a lot of the basic principles of poker are the obviously the same for both. Whilst you need different skills for tournaments without the fundamentals you will not do well in them. I only say this FUTR as i know you are just learning the game and i think you should not try to run before you can walk ! As a side note i am by my own admission not a great ring game player, i dont lose all the time or anything ! but have studied hard to improve my tournament play.and feel that is better suited to my style of play. | Don't get the wrong impression, you can be good at both, you just have to change your mindset back and forth between the two. Sometimes I consciously think things like "oh, if this were a tournament I'd fold this drawing hand" when I'm playing a ring game; or when I'm in a tournament I'm constantly thinking things like "Oh, if I could go back and get more chips, I'd definitely play this, but I can't so I'll fold." Hope this helps. | ||

| A lot of the plays I make in tournaments, I have to remember that they don't work in ring games. It's easier to push people off of hands when they have limited chips. When people can just go to their pocket and buy more, you usually have to show down the best hand at the end. I just have to scale back the trickiness from tourney play, and try to make really good hands, whether they are the best made hand or best draw. Keep in mind that the ring games I play are very loose CA-style games, in a tighter game, you can semi-bluff and bluff more. | ||
