| I was just wondering what people thought about online poker vs casino poker. I am just starting out and my experience is very limited. I'vs played the lowest limit (3/6 - Saturday night) at the casino and UB's $0.01/$0.02 and $0.25/$0.50 games. I am reading everything I can but I have only been playing for a couple weeks and I still really suck. The UB $0.25/$0.50 kicked my butt. It seems like I can fight it out in the UB $0.01/$0.02 game and win or lose depending on the table. But I actually found the lowest limit 3/6 casino seemed easier than both the UB games. Am I just imagining this? I think it might be because most people playing the low UB games are just getting into poker but like myself they are serious about it and are probably reading the same books I am while the casino has a lot more uneducated 'gamblers' with more money than brains. Any comments? When I get to the point that I can do well in the UB $0.25/$0.50 games, would I do well in the casino at the lowest tables that are offered there? | ||

If you play solid you will do well anywhere. There are 2 problems here penny games weaken your discipline. you develop bad habits with the oh its only a penny syndrome. Secondly, casino poker is vastly different than online. You are in a strange environment, ther are many distractions ( some of them very attractive ), people are talking, and you have suddenly jumped from "its only a penny " to its $5 or $10 Only take on one of these challenges at a time. Move up in limits online, make any casino visti limited to exploration of the environment, not a commitment of your bankroll. You have plenty of time, casinos never close nor does the Internet. Good Luck--you are part of the boom --Gary | ||

| Especially at low limits, I it's also important to consider the costs of rakes and tips in your evaluation (a clear advantage of playing online). I was thinking about this last night after a session at UB. I won about 20 hands in 2.5 hours and paid about $40 in rakes. Had I played those same hands at my local So.Cal B&M Casino, I would have paid about $56 in rakes plus another $15 or so in tips--an extra $30 out of my pocket. The extra expenses would have turned a decent session at UB into a marginally positive session at the B&M. | ||

| IMHO, there is one huge advantage in playing online -- the ability to play multiple tables. For example, playing 3 tables online averaging 60 hands per hour per table = 180 hands an hour. This could equal six hours of B & M play. Assuming If someone can average 1.5 BB per hour per table playing $3$6 online that equals $27.00 an hour. To equal that play in B & M one would have to beat the game at 4.5 BB per hour. Not likely. Hope this is helpful. (Second big advantage--lower rake) Spartan51 | ||

| having played thousands of hours online line and off this year, i have to say i don't like online poker very much. perhaps it doesnt suit my style of play, maybe in cardrooms i just get a better feel for players. but i think offline is easier to beat either way. online players are much more educated, offline i encounter more gamblers and non serious poker players. (i play in sf bay area, and there are lots of good players here too) i do like tournies online more though. reading palinyas stats from her penny game from another post, i can tell u he/she is not playin like a standard loose LL player. very tight, so i dont think thats a problem. but hand selection and being tight is easy compared to dealing with poker pros at the tables when your starting out. my advice is to play 3-6 if u have the bankroll and just learn it the hard way. | ||

| My first time out to the brick and mortar casino, I had never done any studying or read anything on poker. I had played a few really bad drunken home games before and watched it on TV :) Anyway my $100 lasted me on the 3/6 table for about 10 hours (I was up to $240 at one point) and it really didn't seem that much different than the home games. I went and bought a couple books on low limit poker and started reading them. A couple chapters in I was really seeing huge truck sized holes in the way I played at the casino. I figured if $100 lasted me 10 hours in a 3/6 game then I should be able to play for quite a while on $25 playing a $0.25/$0.50 game online, especially with my new found knowledge :P I opened an account, finished reading most of my books in the couple days that it took the account to get verified and I entered the game. Two hours later my $25 was $5. Those guys cleaned me out fast. I dropped to the $0.01/$0.02 game thinking it would be easier and they took another $4.50 off of me. So now I was down to $0.50. I read some more and analyzed some of the hands I had lost big on and I found out that although my first two cards were usually played not too badly, I was often settling for second best after the flop and later on. I'd take a straight ignoring the fact that there were three hearts up and four people raising/calling me. I'd be happy with bottom two pair. When I flopped trips, I'd ignore the fact that someone didn't respect my bets and they would reraise and cap me. I was excited about my hand and it clouded my vision of what was really happening. Once I realized this, I went back in and my $0.50 didn't disappear this time. Two days later I was up to a buck. The day after that $2.00. Now I am just under $5.00 and pretty confident that I can make $0.10 to $0.75 an hour depending on who shows up on the table (I think that's pretty good with a $0.01/$0.02 bet) It's hardly high stakes though. I am pretty sure there are people that come down from the higher games there just to mess around. I've seen some pretty good players that caught me off gaurd and check raised me when I thought I won but hadn't. I log everything and I see my earnings per hour going up everyday. I still catch myself doing some stupid things and afterwards wondering why I did it but I can recognize it and they are getting fewer and fewer. In a week or so, once my game tightens up some more, I'll go back to the casino and give it a shot again but I'm thinking I'll do pretty good. I'm pretty sure the last time I was there that there was only one person who knew what he was doing at all on my table (he walked away with about $500) It makes sense that the lowest limit casino game is easier than a $0.01 online game. Who plays online $0.01? Pretty much people that are studying and want to try things out before investing real money. The average gambling casino person probably doesn't even know online poker exists. Clueless people that want to go gamble go to the casino, they don't seek out an on-line game. | ||
