Pocket Pairs - LONG POST...., Eman, 26. Sep 2003 08:33

In loose 1/2 2/4 games onlin. Im having a tough time playing low pocket pairs. I usually call if its cheap and fold to heavy raising preflop. I sometimes muck them from early position in a passive game, and sometimes raise in tight game from early position. I have seen that alot of times my pairs would have won (made a set on the flop). Ithink im gonna start and play all pckt pairs preflop (no matter what, this is in a limit game).

Heres my logic, let me know if I make any sense. Im no poker Guru.
The chance of making a set on the flop when you get pckt pairs is roughly 12%. So lets say you get dealt small pocket pairs 100 times for 100 BB. Lets say on average 4 out of 10 players see the flop and on average 3 take it too the river. You can look to win on the low side (not factoring in your raises) about 13 BB. So for those 12 times out of 100 you make your set, thats a payout of 156 BB.

I know will some hands where you made a set, But you also may win some hands if you didnt make your set either, (if played correctly)

Even if the betting is capped preflop, I think you still need to call. 1 BB become 4 and the numbers just multiply.

Is my way of thinking completely off track.

PS. How pissed was Sam Farha (know for playing a lot of hands), when he mucked his 22's preflop and the set came up on the flop!!!

Your math on how often you flop a set is fine, but I think your logic is flawed because it appears you are assuming that every time you flop your set you win and we all know that isn't true. I wouldn't play any of the small pocket pairs from EP in an aggressive game because you will be paying too much of your profit (when you flop and win) to see the flop on the times you don't flop anything.

Play small pairs in EP and MP only if the game is loose passive. You can be a little more flexible with them in LP. Follow the no set no bet rule most of the time (unless you flop an over pair like 66 with a 345 flop or something like that).

And most importantly, when you make the correct decision to fold them when the game is tough of tight, learn to deal with the fact that you might have flopped a set and won. If you don't do this and play every small pair from every position, you will lose a lot of bets in the long run.

I understand that I'll lose hands that i had made the set. Is there any way to calculate that? If you flop the small set on the board and lose? I think that'll give me better understanding of how to play them.

But even if you play your small pairs in a capped bet preflop, you still will hit your set 12% of the time. I guess the key is finding out what the numbers are for not winning a hand when you flopped a small set.
