A few players have been successful making a living strictly from tournaments. Many have tried and failed. The extremely volatile nature of tournaments makes it a pretty unpredictable way to make a living. Virtually all of the successful big-name tournament players either have a backer, or another good source of income. I sure wouldn't want to have to depend on it.

Whilst i am in NO way a pro i now play the majority of my poker in tournaments normally no limit ( both B&M and on line ) i have found myself making a lot more money per hour this way and now make enough from my play to make a difference in my life.

On line i prefer the smaller games to be better for me to beat and the 18 people tournaments on line games have earned me a lot in the past 6 months. I often find that my earnings in these games in effect allow me to play ' for free ' in the bigger tournaments where i have a record that is improving weekly !

I would say that to become a pro though is difficult as you can easily play well and not place in 10+ tournaments which would come to probably 2 or 3 weeks and this would probably occur quite a lot. This situation is compounded by the fact that the real money in tournaments is to be found in the final few places and these place can often only be reached by taking a few risks ( though of course not always !!) which mean a lot more finishes just outside the money but a lot more places in the ' big' money of the top 3 or so places.

I guess what i am trying to say is that the variance of being a tournament pro is probably too high for people to make a living off it unless they have, as Mark states, a backer or a massive bankroll!

Cheers

Does anyone have a good feel for how tipping and house percentages for tournaments compare with ring games?

For tournaments every player pays the house, but only the winners tip. (IE, the dealers only get tipped by people who finish "in the money", but everyone who plays in the tournament pays there 10% to the house up front). Whereas in ring games each player pays his tips and rake every time they win a hand.

I usually feel like I need to tip the dealers fairly well when I place in tournaments since if even one of the money finishers stiffs them they could be well underpaid for the time they dealt the tournament.

Some tournaments put 3% of the prize pool into a tip pool for the dealers, I like that method since it means nobody gets stiffed and the winners can still offer extra if they want.

Some have written that given travel expenses, buy-ins, etc, that very, very few tourney players are rich from just playing tourneys alone. They have to have backers or supplement their income in other ways. Negreanu once wrote a good article (which I can't locate, unfortunately) that said a big problem with tourney players is that when they win a big event they use that "score" to live way above their means, until they run through the money, go broke, and have to scrape up the cash for a buyin to the next event. A typical problem for a compulsive gambler mentality.

Instead, he argues, they should be just viewing that win as part of their hourly rate. A rate that has ridiculous variance vs ring game players, of course, but an hourly rate that can be calculated nonetheless, and a rate you should using to live within your means.
