800 person freeroll, kimmi690, 25. Sep 2003 21:03
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
Tonight I played a freeroll with 800 entrants...I came in 40-something place...and I was wondering if that was OK...made a tiny bit o cash, nothing to write home about, and I was knocked out with a pair of kings (my heads up opponent had AK suited and got the flush)...the blind was ready to eat me up anyway, so I went all in...did I do the right thing? Or should I have folded that hand? I was UTG with 500/1000 blinds and I had the baby stack of 1080...

Thanks all! I am learning so MUCH here!

Kimmi :)

There's no question. You should have played the hand with just a smidge over a big blind left. You will be forced to go all in on your next hand anyway, and it's very probable that it won't be as good as KK.

And 40-something out of 800 is really very good. Sometimes in tournaments, the cards just aren't running your way and it is a short term event, so even for the most skilled player in the tournament, there is a bit of luck. Keep up the good work Kimmi!

Making the top 10% (usually the payout barrier) consistently is a good indication of skill. Making the top 3 spots involves more luck than just making the money in most tournaments. You have to get some cards to play with when the blinds start eating people up to move up to the top 1-2%. I would say anytime you make the top 10% you are doing well.

Good luck,

Guinnessman

Hey Kimmi,

Of course you did the right thing. With only a small amount of chips and the blinds being as high as they were, you probably weren't going to see a better hand than K-K. I would have committed my chips as well pre-flop.

Just know Kimmi, that as long as you always play your best game, than that's all you need to concern yourself with. Did you make good decisions throughout the entire tourney......did you read your opponents well and were you able to benefit from that?.. etc. etc..

When you get more experience, your own game will become stronger, and you'll pick up on new things as well, and you'll keep devoloping your game and making it better. That's what it's all about.

Sometimes in tournament play (because the results are based on short term), there's not much you can do. Some players like to 'gamble it up' and they get lucky, and then they get great starting hands and capitalize on them as well. It's like being in the right place at the right time, and being fortunate, and aware enough to dodge bullets. While there's other players who never get much at all and wind up being blinded out, or they move all-in with A-A and it gets 'cracked', (for example). It happens, and it happens to the best of 'em.

It takes alot of patience and a totally different mindset to play tournament after tournament, so give yourself credit for that.
40th place out of how many?...."800"?........well done I say.......well done:)

4P-

P.s. The next time your K-K will hold up and you'll be another step closer to the final table:)

Hey Kimmi, congratulations to you money placing.

I was watching you during that hand (and a couple before when your all-in worked!) waiting for the other freeroll, and I don't think anybody would have played the hand differently (Even if I have less experience than most people here).
I have so far only managed a 58th place so I wouldn't say that the hourly rate is very good for these freerolls (got a whoping $2.80), but you get a lot of practice in multi-table NLHE tornament play for nothing....

I'll keep an eye out for you during the upcoming torneys.

BTW. I'm realrookie when playing.

Ok, You can have #1 tonight (have to go to the in-laws anyhow) if I can have it tomorrow :-)

I'm also looking forward to read all the good advice on this board, my game had improved immensely since I started reading it. Not that I had that good of a game to start with after about a month playing at Party (being one of the fishes....)
