Where to play in Detroit this weekend?, Machinegun68, 25. Sep 2003 14:28

Hello all! Anyone familiar with the poker rooms in Detroit (Greektown, MGM, and I think there's another one). I'm going to the Tigers game Sunday and would like to get some poker going before driving back south. Which casinos spread which games and at what limits? I would particularly be interested in a $2/$4 or $3/$6 HE game. I will NOT be able to go across the river to Windsor unfortunately- which casinos in Detroit would everyone recommend? I have heard Greektown is a dump.

To my knowledge the only legal poker rooms in the lower peninsula are at Greektown in Detroit and Little River in Manistee. Last time I was at Greektown the table talk was about how the poker market is hugely not being served in Detroit; the Motor City Casino supposedly was going to open one but ran into union trouble with the dealers.

The upshot is that there are only eight legal poker tables in Metro Detroit, so be prepared for a goodly wait. They do accept call-ins so you might use a cellphone to call ahead in the sixth inning or so.

The Greektown Casino isn't a glimmering palace of slots as far as the eye can see, it's true ... but actually I like it the better for that. Personal preference; it feels like it's in a historic building, and in fact it is.

You should have fun once you sit down. The $5/$10 tables are terribly loose and I'm well up in my three trips there. I haven't sat $10/$20 or $20/$40 but I've observed; the only difference seems to be slightly better starting hand selection on the part of the players.

By the way: Park at the casino (free validation inside the casino) and take the People-Mover two or three stops north to Grand Circus Park; it's a block from the stadium.

Go Tigers!
