was this lucky?, Palinya, 25. Sep 2003 10:06

I just started playing poker about a week ago and I haven't really done any real money games. I have been playing on UB 10/20 play money until I get a feel for what I'm doing while reading everything I can and experimenting with it in the fake games.

Anyway, I was in late position. The table had 10 people. It seemed loose without any maniacs. There was a lot of calling and people would see the flop about 80% of time. I was dealt a 7s7h. Everyone called so I did too. (I would have folded with 2 raises) The flop came up 6h8h9d. Everyone checked. I bet and everyone checks. Turn came up a Kh. This worried me a little but then everyone checked again so I bet again. Everyone folded except for 2 people (which made me really happy) and a 3c comes up on the river. Everyone checks to me. I'm thinking at this point one of the 2 probably has the flush or a straight but there is a decent sized pot and I have been raising for so long, I decide to try to make them think I had the high flush. I bet... they both folded

Was this foolish? Should I have gotten out earlier?

I dont think you can get any feel for strategy at the play chips. The play chip games are only too get you comfortable with Texas Holdem rules and how the game is played. Real money is completely different.

They didn't fold because you bluffed them off of hands better than yours. They folded because they had nothing. This is a classic case of making a river bet when you can only be called by hands that beat you. Somebody with an 8 will call you there since the pot is large ... especially in a play money game where people don't fold if they have *anything* ... Now when you bet and somebody has a better hand than you they win that bet and if they raise you have to decide whether to pay them off or fold yourself ... maybe it costs you 2 bets. If you are the best hand they fold and it makes you nothing. You should only be bluffing at a pot on the river when you think an opponent will fold a hand better than the hand you have.

you have to learn to trust your instincts. if you think you have the best hand then bet for value. you won that hand and thats your goal. you have to experiment with what kinds of betting and raising to try. every table is different. I would have raised preflop to thin the field however. your 7's will do much better against a limited field. also remember to bet or raise on the flop to see where you are at. if you have a so so hand and you bet on the flop and get raised you can usually fold with a clear concious good luck and keep playing you will only get better

kcpd2050, you said you would have raised preflop to thin the field, but Palinya stated that there were already many limpers. A raise from late position with many limpers will not thin the field, but will merely get more money in the pot. Especially in a play money game, but in any game of limit hold'em, any limper is sticking around for one more bet preflop if it gets popped after them. In fact, Mason Malmuth's recent advice was *never* to fold pre-flop if you've already limped in and someone makes it two bets after you. I don't think Mr. Malmuth typically uses the word *never* in reference to hold'em, but he did in this case.

Actually, a raise from late position with tons of people already committed to see the flop is probably the correct play, but not to thin the field. Although I think limping to see if you catch a 7 on the flop is a defensible play, raising to put more money in the flop in the event you catch a 7 or better is also solid when you know that seven or eight people are going to come with you. Of course, by building a pot that is that big pre-flop, anyone who flops any weird draw is going to stick around to the river.
