| Playing a $1 NL multi-player tournament last night on Empire. 1st-5th get entry into $25 Tournament and 6th was $22. I was playing solid poker against some pretty bad players. Was happy with my play. With about 25 players left and blinds at 200/400 I hadn't played a hand into 20 hands. I was watching my stack shrink because of the blinds. I am in the BB, UTG limps, everyone flods, SB joins the party. Flop is 10 Q 10. I have KJo. Everyone checks. Turn is a blank. I was hoping for A or 9 for my str8. SB checks, I check. UTG bets 400. Now I get the feeling he is betting our weakness and probably only holds Ace high. Which would beat me. I look at my chips and I have 1400. If I call I am getting 1000 to 400 or 2.5 to 1 odds. I have 8 outs to my str8, so an opened str8 draw is 5 to 1. Based on my odds, I should fold. I thought long and hard. (okay it wasn't long, only had 20 seconds) but I did think hard. I call I am at 1000. If I miss I can fold. Since there were 25 players left and 19 had to drop before the money, I think I should have taken the risk. The more I think about it, an all in might have won me the pot since I put him on only a high card. Maybe a raise would be smarter, especially if the SB folded. Was this my time to take my stand? BTW, the river was an Ace giving me the nut str8 and he didn't have an ace, he bet with King high. Even if I the ace didn't fall I think I should have seen the river. | ||

| calling would have been a mistake. Not only do you need good odds, late in a tournament i would be looking for a big overlay to chase a drawing hand. Taking a - EV situation is not the way to get ahead in a tournament. Even taking break even situations is not good. When the difference between each place has so much difference (25-6 get nothing), you need to be conservative to advance. If you called you would have been gambling. While you would have had some chips left, you would have put yourself in a bad position. Mark | ||

| I think you played it correct, and the Ace that came on the river is haunting you with "what if" thoughts. At that point in the tournament you don't want to gamble a significant portion on your stack when all you have is a draw. Keep making solid decisions like that and you'll have some nice finishes. | ||

| I agree dont live in the past. You made the correct desision so never look back. I never chase draws late in a tourney. I do not want to double someone up if I miss. | ||

| You didn't say how small your stack was and how it measured up to the other players, but it sounds to me like you had a pretty below average stack there. That's a tough spot since you don't have position. I think I might have taken a stab at the flop myself - depending on the nature of the other two players in & their stack sizes. Another alternative might have been to reraise the guy's measly turn bet all-in. If you were right and he had A-high (which would have been sensible given his play) a semi-bluff is good here - he'll be hardpressed to call, and if he does, you have quite a few outs. I don't think folding in your spot was bad either, but it's bordering on weak tournament play. I think I've improved upon several areas lately, including making stronger moves in tournaments, learning when it's time to make a stand, putting a greater emphasis on stack sizes, etc. I've actually learned a fair amount from WPT :O) In general, there's a very fine line between being offensive and gathering more chips, and being defensive and protecting the ones you have. When your stack starts getting really small and you're not yet really close to the money, the line shifts a little and you HAVE to gamble. I think that this might have been one of those spots. | ||

| I agree that sometimes you have take the initiative, but I still don't like calling in that circumstance. Mostly because there is still another player in the hand. He probably has nothing, but with one player betting and another one left to act it just seems like too big of a gamble. I would rather lead bet the semi-bluff then raise over the top with that draw. But with 400 blinds, you could definately make a case for it. I guess it would really depend on what the other people's stacks are, how many people get paid, etc. I can't tell you how many times I've folded with only a few chips and then had a much larger stack bust out the next hand leaving me to collect a money finish with practically no chips left. So I tend to be a little tight calling with my remaining chips.... | ||

| Hi. Calling is not a god play in the circumstance you cescribe. Raising probably is. BarryT | ||

| This seems one of those situations where raising or folding is a lot better than calling. Lou Krieger Host at Royal Vegas Poker | ||
