| Gonna participate soon in an alcohol involved super loose/aggressive 1/2$ 5 card stud home game. Lots of big egos involved. No one really knows how to play. I GUESS. I´ve known the guys for a short time. I'm really not too familiar with 5 card stud. Does anyone know a site offering serious information about the game. I consider myself far better player than anyone I'm going to face. Any sophisticated advice about the game or doing well in this kind of liquerish situation? I guess their going to get really wasted during the play. I'm confident about succeeding in the game but Im eager to get all kind of good information to maximize my profit. Thanks. | ||

| Sonic I have played some 5 card stud (no recently however and mostly pot limit betting however......) and when you are playing with guys who are drunk and have big egos I think one strategy works better than any other. Since you get to see 4/5ths of your opponents hand by the end of the hand the decisions about the strength of their hand will be a lot more accurate. If your head is "on straighter" than your opponents you should be able to make more when you are winning and lose less when you are behind. This is the basis for the strategy I am talking about which is simply to LET THEM BLUFF. There is a lot smaller chance in 5 card stud than other poker games you are familiar with that your opponent will catch up when he is behind. So when he is betting and you are ahead he is taking very much the worst of the bet. It is impossible for him to make up for this error and from my experience in the game it seems that most bad players do this way too often. So don't bluff much....let them do that....this alone should make you a winner in the game if they play as poorly as you say. Good luck!!!! GRANT PITTMAN | ||

| I would also not slowplay your hands, meaning bet for value much more. If they are drunk, they will likely call with very inferior hands, so give them that chance. If you do this and let them bluff at you, you get the best of both sides of the coin. Good luck. Any other seats available? :) Steve | ||

| The nicest thing about 5stud against idiots is that you can tell by everybody's board cards what their best possible hands and worst possible hands are. There are very few things sweeter than a player with AKQ on his board betting the bejesus out of it when you're showing TT2 and actually have the 2. I found that when I was playing with very inferior players, I could make a lot of money just by folding my junk and playing very honestly on my good hands. Oh, and don't draw at all, generally. Like 7stud you'll need to know how many outs you have, which are dead, and how many cards have been exposed, but you generally won't get far enough to have drawing hands. For instance, you should never get yourself into a position of holding 6s7s8s9s and having the magical straight flush draw int he middle of the spectrum because you should have thrown your hand away before it got to that point ... unless nobody is betting of course. | ||

| I played in a home game this past weekend. One of my wifes coworkers was throwing a 5-year old Bday party for her son. The only people I knew were my wifes friend and her husband (Frank). Frank and his friends were talking about putting together a card game later in the day. $$$$. The party started at 2 in the afternoon, and the poker game was gonna start around 8. That a lot of drinks. I wasnt drinking that day, so I knew I had an edge. Anyway the game was .50/1.00 dealers choice - 6-8 players. We played alot of 5 card stud when 8 people were playing. I never played 5 card before. IT WAS EASY MONEY. Only play your good hands. Never bluff, never draw, It was the easies game. The one game that I like alot was Five Card Stud with a Replace (after youve received your 5 cards, you have the option of replacing one for $3). That was a great money maker. I ended up winning $180.!!!! | ||

| Once you can replace a card, it isn't anything aproaching 5 card stud anymore. All of the probabilities go out the window, since you now get a cheap draw to another street on big pots. This would mean that chasing draws on the final card would be more worthwhile. I wouldn't touch this game unless all the players were terrible, the stakes were $10-$20 or higher, and I studied for a long time how to play before sitting down. | ||

| HA HA, YOU'RE GOING TO NEED A TIME MACHINE, TO GET INFO ABOUT FIVE CARD STUD!! PEOPLE ACTUALLY STILL PLAY THIS? FUNNY. IN A LIMIT GAME, THERE IS NO SOPHISTICATED INFORMATION ABOUT FIVE CARD STUD. THIS IS BECAUSE, LIMIT FIVE CARD STUD, IS THE SIMPLEST GAME, IN THE HISTORY OF POKER. THERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE RULES: DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT STRAIGHTS AND FLUSHES IF YOU ARE BEATEN IN SIGHT, GET OUT UNLESS YOU START WITH A PAIR (ONLY WILL HAPPEN ABOUT ONE TIME IN 18) DON'T PLAY A HAND, UNLESS A MINUMUM OF HAVING A HOLE CARD, THAT IS BIGGER THAN ANYONE'S UP CARD, AND THAT THE OTHER'S OF THAT RANK, ARE LIVE. STARTING WITH ACE KING, WHEN TWO OTHER PEOPLE ARE SHOWING ACES, IS NOT GOOD AT ALL. IN A NORMAL GAME, WHERE EVERYONE AND THEIR BROTHER DOES NOT STAY IN TILL THE END, ACE KING HIGH, WITHOUT IMPROVEMENT, WILL WIN MUCH OF THE TIME. BUT, IN A 1-2 GAME, WITH DRUNKEN PLAYERS, YOU WILL NEED A PAIR TO WIN, MOST OF THE TIME. KEEP TRACK OF THE CARDS THAT ARE OUT, AND THOSE THAT ARE FOLDED. LIVE CARDS, ARE VERY IMPORTANT. WHEN THE CARDS THAT YOUR OPPONENTS NEED TO PAIR UP, ARE DUPLICATED IN EACH OTHER'S HANDS, YOU CAN CONTINUE TO BET UNIMPROVED ACE HIGH HANDS, WITH MUCH GREATER CONFIDENCE. EXAMPLE: TWO PEOPLE SHOW A KING AND A JACK. ANOTHER JACK WAS FOLDED ON SECOND STREET. I WOULD BE BETTING MY ACE HIGH, AS THE CHANCES OF EITHER HAVING, OR SUBSEQUENTLY MAKING A PAIR, ARE MUCH MUCH LESS. WHILE THIS IS NOT TRUE WITH MOST GAMES, AS WITH MORE CARDS, IT IS VERY VERY VERY EASY TO OUT DRAW THE BEST STARTING HAND, IN FIVE CARD STUD, STARTING HANDS, ARE ABOUT 90 PERCENT OF THIS GAME. HAVE AN APPROPRIATE STARTING HAND STRATEGY, IN YOU ARE JUST ABOUT GAURANTEED TO WIN AT THIS GAME. BUT, DON'T FALL IN LOVE WITH THE GAME, IT IS ONLY AVAILABLE ON ONE SITE, AND THEN ONLY AT THE 1-2 LEVEL. | ||

| I used to play 5-card stud quite a bit at the Lucky Nugget online poker room. I haven't played there in a while, so I'm not sure if they still have it. It was a pretty profitable game, most often the only game was a $2/$4 game. | ||

| I heard some 5 stud advice a long time ago that was something along the lines of "If your hand can't beat what everyone else is showing on the table, dump it" which basically means don't chase. I don't play too much 5 stud, but it's worked out pretty good for me when I do. Lee | ||

| yep, "Beat the Board" is what my Texas Grandfather said to me. He also said "Don't draw to the inside Str8". I was like 5 years old, no wonder I'm a poker player now. LOL | ||

| This game is pretty simple, ALWAYS make sure you can beat the board UNLESS you can represent something that will beat what the other person either has or is representing. The only draws you care about are draws to big pairs. Str8s and flushes are nice to make, but you can't ever count on them in a game with only 5 cards. Basically, just make sure you try to keep track of the liveness of your cards, and key cards from an opponent. For instance, I'm a lot happier to start with AK against a suspected medium pair, if there have been no A's or K's out and there is at least one other caller. The starting hands are really easy to remember, play any pair as long as you think you aren't against a higher pair, and play BIG LIVE card hands when the pot is multiway, or you suspect the opponent doesn't have anything either, but don't stick to these hands too long if you don't improve. You can also try to steal if several people have folded and you have a scare card showing. Anyway, this is all off the top of my head. I can't find 5card stud games too much, so I'm a bit out of practice. | ||

| One last thing, the bread n butter of this game is to have a big pair. With only 5-cards any pair above 99s or so can often take down a pot unimproved. Two pair is a much bigger hand in 5 card stud than 7 card stud. I wonder why 5-card stud isn't played anymore, it can be a very fun game. I guess if everyone plays correctly it might be hard to generate any action. That's it, Good luck! | ||

| Don't bluff. Don't draw. Value bet every chance you get. If you're playing against alcohol fueled egos, you're in a great situaiton, especially when you have a hand that you know for sure is better than anything your opponents have. For overly aggressive players, 5-card stud (and razz, too) are probably the worst games they can play in. | ||
