Interesting hand with 2-pair board, mkpoker, 24. Sep 2003 22:58

Here's a very interesting hand I played at UB tonight. In retrospect, I'm wondering if I handled the turn play right...would welcome others' thoughts. We're at 3/6 HE. Table is shorthanded (6 players) and game has been pretty average...perhaps a little tighter than usual, but not much.

UTG, I'm dealt A9o. I raise. All fold except the BB, who calls. Flop comes ThTsKh. BB checks, I bet and am called.

Turn comes Kd. BB checks. Again I bet into it. BB raises (a check-raise). Now I'm troubled. Was he slowplaying trip Ts? If he had a K, why didn't he raise with top two pair? He's got to be worried I'm holding a K because of my pre-flop raise. Of course, if he doesn't have a K or a T, my ace-high will win. I wonder if he too has an ace and we're looking at a chop. I call.

Turn is 3h, putting a 3rd heart on the board. BB bets out. I figure I'm in trouble, but make the crying call. He turns over 9hJh for the flush. He had raised on a flush draw plus a gutshot straight draw.

Looking back I wonder if I should have reraised his turn bet, which I see now was a classic semi-bluff. A reraise from me would have screamed "full house" and he might have folded his flush draw. Had he capped the turn, I could have safely assumed he had the full house and I would have folded. My call may have been the worst choice of all.

As for the call on the river, I think that wasn't quite as close. I figured I was probably beat, but thought a bluff was possible enough to warrant the crying call. What do you think?

I think you have it right. By 3-betting the turn, you are investing the same amount of $$ that you did by calling the tunr and calling the river, but you at least give your opponent the chance to fold. Additionally, even if he (stupidly) calls your 3-bet, he will check the river no matter what comes, so again you get a free showdown.

I will agree that the order of plays in this case should have been 3-bet, fold, call.
