Large Online Tournament strategy, Bond18, 24. Sep 2003 22:34

I've been playing a lot of the 300-800 person tournys at party lately and havn't made it past 171 (tho my connection got messed up and started folding hands, like pocket queens) so i need some new input on large online tournament strategy. Thus far i've been playing pretty tight, looking to double up PF with AA or KK, or maybe QQ if i think i can get a caller, otherwise limiting play to AK, AQ, AJ and A10 in middle and late, smaller pairs in late positoin, either as betting and stealing blinds or calling hoping to flop trips or get out, and minimum use of suited connectors expect KQs. Also trying to stay away from drawing situations where there are large numbers of chips involved even if i have the odds. Any further advice you guys can give me?

Be the aggressor when you are in a hand. You can play a hand as weak as ATo in the right spot...it just needs to be a steal bet from the cutoff where you put in the first raise.

Fold what seem to be really good hands to someone else who is showing aggression from an early position. For example, a hand like TT is great if it is passed to you or there are a lot of limpers, but it becomes garbage facing a 4 or 5x raise from an EP player. Throw it away and don't call.

As you progress in the tournament, if your stack size doesn't increase, you need to start becoming a little looser with your starting requirements in LP. You need to try and steal more often. I don't advocate going overboard with this, but hands that you would never play in the early rounds (KT, A9, etc.) now become steal candidates.

All this aside, you have the right attitude. The only way to win a tournament or make the final table is to survive until you get a chance to put your chips to work. There are some days (or weeks or months) where that just won't happen, so you need to understand that and accept it.

Good luck,

Steve

I agree you have to stay alive in large tournaments. When you believe you got the best hand don't be afraid.
Sometimes you have to make big laydowns. For example, yesterday I was in a tourney with KK, there was
an early position raiser and another one raised all in from MP. One had AA the other had QQ sometimes
you got to fold really strong hands in order to survive. Someone else said they folded AK. Huge hands dealt
that time and 2 people survived cause they folded. Queen Queen ended up losing but he was the chip
leader so he was ok.

But the point is you got to know when your beat. Also I wouldn't chase to much in no limit tournies unless you
are the bettor. You need to be agressive in late position with anything worth calling. If its worth calling your
raising. Assuming no one has called. If you go on a streak where you get 3-4 hands and are now in good
chip position you should open up your game. Use your chips to your advantage. However play hands that can
win. Hands that you usually call with your raising with, when you have a good chip position. You will end up
buying more pots this way and increasing your stack. If you get reraised while making a move don't be
stubborn fold unless you have the best of it.

good luck,
Pedro

Gap concept, gap concept, gap concept. If you feel funny about calling a raise with a hand, you probably shouldn't do it. Always have respect for the raiser, and always have respect for anyone who calls your raises.

That's not to say you shouldn't play your hands aggresively, but if you try to steal with something like AT, get called, hit your ace, and think you might be outkicked by the flop action, you probably are. Just listen to your gut instinct, and if it's saying let it go, DO IT! I lay down a lot of hands in a tournament when another player is the aggressor and laying it on thick, even if I think I *may* have the best hand just because I cannot afford to be wrong. If they want to risk a lot of chips to bluff me off a pot, then they've gotten what they wanted. But I'm doing to nail them when I *know* I have the best hand.

Stay tight and patient. You only need 1 chip left to come back.

The best advice I have is to use patience. The few large tourneys that I have made final tables on I have also been very shortstacked several times during the tourney. But if you have the discipline to keep waiting for premium cards, you always have a chance to turn it around. If you get a little behind early don't be tempted to play looser if it's still early in the tournament.

Good luck!
