| I read an article online about "lobby surfing" and have been putting the information gleaned to use. I want to throw some of my thoughts out here and see what others think.. I look for a game that has no more than half the players with greater than 25x the BB in their stacks, prefereably only 2 or 3. If I find such a game, I want a seat with at least 1 of the big stacks on my immediate left, or no more than 1 seat away on my left. I like to see a "roller coaster" of stacks on my right. I use the general rule of thumb that the bigger stacks are probably the tighter players unless I have the time to watch serveral hands before taking my seat. I can usually place the short stacks on loose or timid players. My initial predictions are usually verified/corrected within 2 orbits. One kind of game I avoid like the plague is where almost all stacks are 20BB or more in size, that tells me the soft players have all been busted out and I stand a good chance of being the new fish :-) Anyone care to offer comments or other guidelines? | ||

That's why I throw these things out there. Besides, if I look that bad to you, then maybe you'll underestimate me at the table some day :-) | ||

| Bot, I use basically the same formula as you do, however I only do it on truepoker. Most sites people always buy in w/ the same amount when they sit at a table, however at truepoker you can only sit at one table and people tend not to adjust their chip stacks, they often just play w/ what they have available showing at the table. As you posted, the people who are way underfunded usually end up giving up their entire stack. The biggest exception is some people who seem to enjoy starting off way underfunded so they can go all in, they will often keep rebuying until they finally hit a hand, then play w/ the winnings. My guess is that psychologically they like playing w/ a stack that is mostly other players money from that session, makes no sense to me but they are easy to spot and adjust for... I have not found this technique very helpful on any other sites... | ||

| Well, I buy-in generally for 20BB in most games I play, so I am not sure I understand what your strategy is. Just because someone has a lot of $$ in fromt of them doesn't mean they aren't a fish. Example: I sat in a 15-30 game on Party once where the guy in the 7 seat bought in for $600, capped every hand for the first 45 minutes (and I mean EVERY hand), built his stack up to $3000. So, by your measure you would have thought he was the tight player and avoided him. Me? I just sat there and waited for premium hands and the inevitable when his rush would end. Sure enough, two hours later, I was cashing out $2800 from my original $600 buy-in and he was broke. So, I don't think that you can rely on stack sizes to determine if there are good players at tables or not. Look for games where more than 35% of the people are seeing the flop and the pot-size average is 6-7 big bets in each pot. THAT is a good game. | ||
