"It depends" on other factors, not just respect from the other players, it really does. Is the game loose, aggresive, passive?.... for starters.

i have raised but the table was a tight table and a bet on the flop won me the hand after the one caller folded.

ask yourself what are you trying to accomplish with the raise?
well lets see
win the pot there *tight table* required obviously
win the pot with a bet on the flop *and just how far are you willing to take this?*
advertise if you show down at river *assuming you dont improve*
most books seem to advise raising very rarely but mostly for mixing up play reasons, you dont want opponents to get a read on your front end raises. this is also why occasionally you raise with T9s you have a drawing hand that if it hits can win a nice pot but your really just trying to let people know that you dont always have a monster if you raise from front but your EV maybe so low on these hands from that position that table texture and how much you think it will cost to show your opponents your cards will be *paying to advertise and not showing cards is pointless*
and to be honest at any limit under 5-10 maybe even 10-20 i would just call or fold, advertising will never pay for itself cause your opponents in general wont even be paying attention *again table makeup is huge if you happen to be at a very tight table and the chance of you picking up the blinds right there is high give it a shot but the situation almost has to be perfect*

Nowhere near enough information, specifically, you haven't told us about the table at all. Whether you are ahead or behind or dead solid even is irrelevant. The type of game that I am in will determine my play with this hand.

Loose passive, I will call b/c you are generally going to get close to 7-1 to flop a set. Loose aggressive where it will be capped by the time it gets back, into the muck she goes.

That really depends a lot on the table, but I will tell you this: I play EP very tightly, and when I'm UTG, I rarely call; it's almost always either raise or fold.

CALL. THE PRINCIPLE STRENGTH OF THESE SMALL PAIRS, IS

OF COURSE, MAKING SETS. WHEN YOU MAKE A SET, YOU SURE

WILL REGRET HAVING RAISED OUT ALL YOUR CUSTOMERS.

ALSO, ALMOST ONE THIRD OF THE TIME, WITH SO MANY LEFT

TO ACT, SOMEONE WILL HAVE A BIGGER PAIR THAN YOU.

IF YOU HAVE BLOCKED OUT THE FIELD, AND THERE ARE

NO CALLERS BETWEEN YOU AND THE BIG PAIR RERAISER,

YOU HAVE LEFT YOURSELF IN THE HORRIFING POSITION,

OF BEING HEADS UP, OUT OF POSITION, AGAINST A LARGER

PAIR. PURE DEATH TO A HOLD EM PLAYER.

SEVENS OR EIGHTS, ARE JUST NOT HIGH ENOUGH, TO EXPECT

ANY CHANCE OF WINNING, WITHOUT SETTING, SO WHY

KNOCK PEOPLE OUT.

FAR BETTER TO CALL, AND IF YOU GET FIVE OR MORE PLAYERS,

GO AHEAD AND THREE BET SOME OF THE TIME, BUILDING

THE POT, IN CASE YOU FLOP A SET.

ALSO, THIS WILL GIVE YOU AN IMAGE OF UNPREDICABILITY,

WHICH, IF USED PROPERLY, CAN BE DEVESTATING.
