How to play when limited on time..., MozMan, 23. Sep 2003 22:00

| Some of you may know that I play every Tuesday at my B&M. My ex comes to see the kids, so I play poker. The problem I have on Tuesdays is that I am very limited on time, and only get to play for 2-3 hours. If the cards run cold, I never have a chance to ride it out. If it's going well, I often have to leave in the middle of a run. Does anybody have any suggestions for short-time play? Is there some different strategy that should be used for this kind of situation? -Moz "You can see your reflection in the luminescent dash." | ||

Hey Moz, If knowing that you only have a couple of hours to play on Tuesdays' doesn't effect your play in *any* way, then okay. I personally, would not play a session if I knew I had to leave in 2 or 3 hours. I don't think my focus would be there 100%, I just don't. And for that reason alone, I might be giving up an edge there. That's why I will only put in a session if I can play without anything else on my mind, and/or knowing that I can stay for as long as I desired to stay. I think there's a big difference in leaving early because you chose to leave...and leaving early because you know you 'have' to. But you do what works for you, Moz. As far as startegies go...... All you can do is play your solid "A" game, and make sure that you're not playing a little bit loser now because you want to be part of the action. Some people would tend to fall into that category 'due' to their time restraint, as they would feel...."ya know, I may *never* get a really 'good' hand so I'll play 'this' one; it's good enough and hey, I only have a few hours here". (know what I mean......kinda?) Just make sure you're disciplind enough to not fall into that mindset....... and if after those 3 hours you're losing?..... but the 'potential' for you is definitely there.....then so be it. The same applies if you're crushin' them in a really 'unbelievable great' game........ Time to go!! 4P-

| Hey 4- Thanx for the insight. I do always play my "A" game; so it's all good there. Fortunately, I think focus is one of my strengths. The only concession I make to Tuesday nights is that I will only play the 3-6 tables on Tuesdays, that way it really is strictly fun. I play much more seriously on the weekends when I can get there, because the only limit I have is how tired I get. I don't generally lose on Tuesdays, was just thinking maybe I could be winning more, and thought maybe there was some kind of special strategy for short games... but I should know as well as ayone that the best strategy is always the best game, right? :) Thanx for the reminder, I knew I could depend on you. -Moz "You can see your reflection in the luminescent dash." | ||

| im in the same boat, wife goes with me most places and on those rare occasions i can get her into the card room i know in the back of my head i cant stay real long *(#$&(%(! she is a good player just no confidence whatsoever so never plays* any chance you can get online and play? as posted above the kicker is the well im only here a short time and might not get anything better than this so i better push this further than it really deserves syndrome. one problem i have had is the moving up part, slowly you feel your skills improve but you dont have the opportunity to use them against the low limit fish and want to try a bigger game, but when you move up and your on a short time frame you dont know where your at skill wise and if you lose now your stuck back with the fish for months rebuilding the bankroll. if once a week and then only for a few hours is all you think your gonna get for a long stretch i would seriously think of another hobby. not because you lack skills but currently the stress of RL will affect decisions you make at the table which in turn affects how you feel in RL. keep reading, studying playing very low limit or free online and at some point hopefully RL eases up a bit and you can pursue poker more *have done it myself* | ||

| Yeah, I play quite a bit online, 20 hours or more a week. I just like playing live games so much better, that I hate to give up any opportunity I have, ya know? :) -Moz "You can see your reflection in the luminescent dash." | ||

| Darn. I was kinda hopin' to meet one of my professors. I've learned a lot reading here. Playing micro limits, I'm up $150 on UB in a month. Maybe that's not much, but at $0.50/BB at a time, it seems like it is. Maybe next time. (Or if we change plans and go Saturday, and you see a sunburnt Pittsburgher with a VT hat, that's me.) | ||
