How to play paired with high board card in NLHE, Rex Tremendae, 23. Sep 2003 18:01 | ||

| Often I will pair the board’s high card on the flop, but not have the Ace kicker. Sometimes I just check, but frequently when I do bet, someone will raise me. I call, hoping to pair my second card for two pairs. On the turn, the individual who raised after the flop will almost always make the next bet to a level at least double his previous bet. If I don’t improve, my quandry is whether to fold or call, as I expect another large bet after the river card. Thanks for your comments. | ||

| You have to give a little more detail on the hands you have. If for example you hold KQ and the flop has Q x x, you should be betting, and even check raising. If you have crappy hands from the BB like Q9 and the flop is something like 9,2,5, I think you play it for cheap and be ready to fold to anyone showing strenght. What kinda hands are you refering too? What type of game Limit, Nolimit, tourneys?? | ||

| You make good points- Here is more detail-- I play in the $50 NL (real money) HoldEm (NOT tournaments; I think people refer to these as "ring" games) at Empire Poker (online). To set the stage, I never play junk unless it is "for free" when everyone checks to me (as the BB.) I do not believe in playing a hand before the flop unless I have a pair (AA-77), high "connectors," or ""near-connectors," such as AK, AQ, AJ, KQ; - or -KJ suited, QJ suited, Q 10 suited, or J 10 suited. The situation I refer to is when I pair the HIGH card on the board, but do not have the best kicker. An example... Suppose I limp in MP with QJ suited, a few players call, no raise, and the flop is J-7-3 rainbow. It's checked to me. I don't like to check in this position, both for value and because this allows someone behind me with Ax, Kx, middle connectors (e.g.- 98 or 65), or a three-flush to get a free ride. When I bet $3 or $4, often someone behind me will raise to $6 or $8. I feel that I must call or subject myself to being bullied out of every pot. Now it is heads up; I guess this is what the raiser wanted to accomplish. The problem comes when the turn is a blank. Usually I check to the raiser, (that's why it is a cliché, right?) and he now bets $6 or $7. What should I do? I have a decent kicker, but not the best. Maybe he's testing the waters with a lower kicker, or bluffing a lower pair with a possible draw; but maybe he has a higher kicker, or less often two pairs, or even a set. My concern is being sucked in for a big bet on the river. How does one handle this situation? Thanks!! 24. Sep 2003 07:09 Eman wrote: You have to give a little more detail on the hands you have. | In your example, I might not always bet out. The board is not threatning for a flush or straight. If you check and he bets, I might check raise him to see where you stand. If if raises you again, I might consider folding. If he calls you and the turn is a blank, Ill bet out. If he then raises you again. I might consider folding. But more likely if you showd the strenght after the flop and turn, he may fold. If he raises you. youhave to think he has the better hand. I think alot has to do with your read on your opponents. Do they play marginal hands? What kinda hands have you seen him play? | ||

| keep in mind that in this situation you're only about 8-1 to improve to two pair or a set on the turn, so it's unlikely you're getting good pot odds at this point, and then you're going to be in a similar situation if forced to call a large bet on the turn to see the river ... this assumes that you think you need the two pair or the set to win the hand ... like Eman says, a lot depends on the specific hand and the texture of the flop ... say you hold Kh9s, and the flop comes 9-7-3 of diamonds ... now only 2 of the remaining 3 K's are good because the other will probably make someone a flush ... I think in general calling a decent sized bet when you think you need to pair your second card to win the hand is a good way to bleed off a lot of money | ||

| try and notice which player is doing this to you, depending on the board try and reach the river and see his cards *once only* see what he is betting/playing with, remember its not ALWAYS bad, sometimes you will have the kicker and having someone pay you off is nice. | ||
