I am finding myself playing "chicken" with some of my opponents. There are a couple of people I seem to "run" into on certain sites that like to tell the table that I am a shark, blah, blah, blah...but when I am heads up with these people, I almost feel unsure of my hand...I have been called to the river holding AA, whilst they are playing a stupid hand like J3 os. They lose, but I start to get nervous. And, as alot of you know, I am the Princess of Bad Beats (LOL).

I am still learning about pot odds and stats, but I am really struggling with the psychology of the game. I love to scare the begeebers out of people with my strong hands, but it seems like they are now scaring me with real trash, and sometimes winning. What is a good strategy for holding your own? I am sure all of you have felt this way at least once...did you grow out of it through experience, or was it a discipline exercise?

I would love your advice...I have learned so much here already!

Kimmi :)

Yes, I'm begining to play seriously online too, and I notice like 4 or 5 people will see the reiver, then land a gutshot straight with 2-6o

kimmi,

The best way to hold your own in the game, is to keep playing solid cards. Sometimes they 'will' beat you with trashy holdings, but so what.....in the long run, if they continued to play trash.....they will lose.

(I sense that the chat thing is still bothering you a little bit though).

Poker is filled with alot of psychology, and 'sometimes' players will go to any extreme if they think it can throw you off your game. You can't let that happen. That may be the only weapon they have against you. Be focused and stay focused. I (personally) would "welcome" guys like that in my game. As long as I wasn't too easy to read and I continued to make really good decisions....then the more, the merrier!

Experience will relieve you of some of the "uncomfortable feelings" that you may be going through right now, and with self-discipline, you'll be fine.

Kimmi the best advice I can give you is to work hard on your game. Learn all the aspects of the game and focus hard on those aspects that will be most profitable for the type of game you are playing in. I can't think of a good poker player that wasn't arrogant about their own playing ability. Sometimes this arrogance is based on tournament success and has no proven merit in live action. Often times the arrogance is born of true confidence and skill. This level of confidence can only come from proven success beating your opponents. Work on your game......as you begin to win consistently and BELIEVE that you are winning because of your play your confidence can't help but grow. It is very possible to attain a performance level in poker where you have no fear and only healthy respect for even the best players. Good luck!!! GRANT PITTMAN

Try not to let the table chatter allow them to save a bet here and there. If you think you have the best hand, then bet it. I wouldn't even consider reading someone that plays lots of trash hands for two pairs on the turn or river. If they get there, so be it. You simply have to convince yourself that you're in the pot when you think you have an advantage, and stop focusing on the result of the hand. If you continue to play aggressive with AA and KK when it doesn't seem like you're beat by a good draw, and get shown that J3o for two pair, consider the bet you save when they just call with two pair fearing you're going to show them a set. Yes the maniacs will checkraise you when they hit this type of hand, but the morons will check/call. Every time they just call when you are beat is a decision you don't have to make concerning paying off with a pocket overpair on the river. It's exactly the same as winning an extra bet when you would have called anyway. It may not feel like you gained anything when they get the pot, but what you don't lose because they played passively adds up just the same as if you had made one extra big bet yourself. The longer you play, the less frustrating it will get seeing garbage take the pot. Concentrate on playing each hand the best you can, and reward yourself for doing so. The money will take care of itself in the long run if you make fewer mistakes than everyone else.
