| Hello All: I was wondering if there is anyone out there who believes they have a successful studying or training routine for live NLHE tournaments. I've got one coming up in a couple of weeks, and was hoping to get some hints and tips on preparation--both from a mental perspective and a skill perspective. This is the third live NLHE tournament of my career, and as each one approaches I'm realizing the importance of "being prepared." Before the last tournament I started a training routine. I re-read several tournament poker books and select parts of Super System. I played online in some of the higher-limit Freeplay areas, which I find to be a reasonable (but obviously not great) simulation of NLHE due to the tightness of play. I also spent some hours at the local card room, working on picking up tells from other players, eliminating my tells, and practicing odds calculation. I also studied the odds tables (from several books and the Pokerstove software) and I finally started a Poker Diary to document strategy, helpful hints, bad beats, lessons learned and so on. So my question is, do any of you do something similar that seems to work? Do you have a routine, training regimine or technique you would like to share? Or am I just wasting my time putting in all of these extra hours? It feels like it's helping, and I've progressively been improving my tournament placement. I can only assume that many of you pros out there don't just walk up to the table and rely on your God-given poker genes to win--but I could be wrong. Thanks in advance for your help, guys. Bart | ||

| I start the morning off by drinking 3 raw eggs. I then usually run through the city streets with the a group of children. If I believe that I need some extra preperation I will chase a chicken until I catch it. Sometimes I will also throw in some one arm push-ups. | ||

| I like your training program. I also like to go to my local butcher and beat up on some raw meet. That seems to help. | ||

| One other thing...the first time you take down a big pot, you need to yell "Yo Adrian...I did it!" | ||

| My intensive training program involves ordering a hot dog (usually a turkey dog, with onions, relish and mustard), playing either a game of Ms. Pac Man or Centipede, and making fun of the winners' pictures in the back of Card Player, not to mention the pictures of the columnists (present company excluded, of course). I highly recommend it. Eli | ||

| kudo's to rocky response however back to the real answer. 1) good nights sleep, no poker day before or day of tourney, some of them take a darn long time to finish 2) good meals (eggs in glass are fine, lol) before tourney, no alchocol 3) you're doing this already, but use free time when u fold to watch other players, tendacies, tells, etc, very important later in tourney (if those players survive) 4) your prep seems to be fine, i also keep a diary of wins/losses, side notes, and reminders and have read about 8 books on this subject, most pros seem to suggest doing so so i followed suit. 5) get an odds program, a simulator, that will allow you to test your theories on what hands are winners/losers, (the %) they are available easily on web and for free, cambridge univ has one thats pretty good | ||
