Playing OverCards, Roy Cooke, 22. Sep 2003 06:41 | ||

| When you call with overcards you have only 6 unseen cards to make a pair. So you are 41-6 to make a pair.....Lots of time you will make that pair, you will still not win the pot. You must average winning 7 times the bet called to draw when you hit your pair for your bet to be neutral....And you MUST include the times and bets you lose when your pair loses. I think many players are overvaluing overcard situations...I will draw to overcards, but the situation has to be right.....The propensity to win has to be good and the situation has to lay me the right price....Be careful calling with aggressive players to act behind you that might raise. Life is Good :-) Roy Cooke | ||

| I agree Roy. You have written many times that you are more likely to call with two overcards provided that one of them is not an Ace (say you have KQ) which I think is quite prudent, due to the fact that many players will play any Ace and if the blinds are involved and there wasn't pre-flop raising, there is a good chance that an Ace is not a cleane out. Another point that you hammer home is board texture. If the flop comes JT6, hitting one of your overcards (if you hodl AQ) might not be any good with str8 possibilkities, so you need better odds than the 7-1 to draw. Finally, if I am to play overcards on the flop and the situation is right, I find raising to be the more optimal play as you can potentially limit the field to you and the original bettor, increasing the odds that if you hit your hand will win. Not to mention that you may get a free look at the river card too. | ||

| This is a weakness that i've been able to exploit in my $5-10 online game. I've been able to isolate players who routinely call the flop (and in some case the Turn!) with overcards. (other wise these players do not have very big leaks) And these overcards are just that, they are not connected to draws are in most cases are just an Ace. It gets even better when they overcard drawer won't call the River with just a high card. This allows me to bet many hands into these players profitably. I can even bet an ace with a strong kicker (no pair hand). Mark | ||

| Hi. I play overcards much less than almost anyone else. Another factor is the number of opponents you are facing. If there are several, your overcards lose value much faster than the pot size builds because they are in. BarryT | ||
