I'm looking for suggestions at 15-30, and 20-40 HLDem, INSINK, 19. Sep 2003 15:19 | ||

| I play mostly in LA ....HG,Bike,and commerce....I have found that too many players will play A anything, KX, QX, and small rags, suited or connected. My take is that I see a very loose game at HG consistently. Folks call raises....and try to catch cards. Very few people play tight. That's my point. I'm thinking I should continue to play the opposite ( tight )...only play the top 10-12 hands: AA,KK,QQ,JJ,TT, AK, AQs,AJs,ATs, KQs,99,88....maybe 77. Raise pre-flop, raise on the flop no matter what position...... I realize this is tight, and I may only play 1 hand an hour......but if I fall into their game ...i lose$$$$. Appreciate any comments......Thanks in advance..... INSINK | ||

| I don't play 15-30, but i think you need to read more of Roy's work. While having tight starting requirements is profitable, keeping strict rules may not be the best in every situation. What about lower pairs on the button when everyone else has limped? What about isolating or playing heads-up or 3 way agaisnt maniacs or calling stations with lessor hands? What about stealing the blinds or advertising. You will eliminate some plays from your arsenal if you strictly follow your rules in every situation. Roy's writtings talk alot about playing the situation, not the cards and you may find this helpful. Good luck Mark | ||

| I agree with Mike, that you don't want to lock yourself into a "set of rules"; however, if the game is always as you describe I think you have a profitable idea. Be aware that only playing those hands doesn't garantee anything. Those hands can and WILL get drawn out on, especially in an extremely loose game. Also be aware that your opponents will eventually (maybe) catch on to what you're doing and you will have to loosen up if this happens or you will run the risk of being blinded to death. Watch the game, adapt to play it in the most profitable fashion One problem I've had with this strategy is when you finally do get a hand you feel you "deserve" the pot and bet it regardless of the board and opponents. This is a very dangerous mindset in that you fail to "see" the board. Discipline is still the key and even though you may only be playing 1-2 hands an hour you have to play them with your "eyes open" Good luck Will | ||

| Reminds me of a player I saw at a 6-12 game at Hollywood Park a little while ago. Over 2 hours, I saw him play exactly 2 hands outside of the big blind. He was the easiest read at the table, everyone knew it (even the morons), and nobody would play with him unless they knew they had him beat. It's just too rigid, being that tight won't do well for you since the other players will see what you're doing a mile away, unless of course you get those big hands far more often than you statistically should. There is a happy medium, you don't have to fall into their game but I would recommend expanding your starting requirements. Eli on 19. | When I spot the "any A or K players", I will often try to get it heads up with them if I can. Once you know a player will play A2, your AJ or AT or small pair looks a whole lot better suddenly. Basically, you don't need a great hand, just one that's likely better than what they have. Be aware that if there are other good players in the game, that they may pick up on your isolation plays, so be careful and pick your spots well. | ||
