| I played in my first live tourny a few weeks ago. Everyone there looked at there cards right when they got them. Is it better to wait tell it's your turn to act before you look at your cards so you can watch other players reactions and try to pick up a tell? Obviously position will determine what to do as well. | I prefer to wait until the action is on me and watch to my left to see if anyone is lighting up preparing to put chips in, or disgruntled and folding. But, I have heard others who say look quickly and then watch everyone. I guess it is whatever gets you into your best rhythm. | ||

| If you wait until it is your turn then everyone is watching your reaction and you may give a tell you don't know about. Guinnessman | ||

| Sure, you should be watching your opponents. Your hole cards will still be there when the action comes to you. | ||

| Along similar lines, they say don't look at the community cards when they first come out. Look at the other player's reactions to them. Those cards will still be there when it's your turn (unless you were at my table the time a guy tried to fold the flop.) beigs on 19. | I don't think there's an argument that says that watching your opponents isn't important. But some pro's look at their cards first (such as Cloutier), saying that they would rather know what they have early, so they can watch the players behind them before they play. Other pro's don't like to look at their cards until it's their turn, so they won't give off any tells as to what they might do to people in front of them. (And they can watch the other players who do look at their cards early). I think there are pluses and minuses to each approach, and the right thing to do probably depends on when your opponents look at their cards. | ||
