| So anyway I'm playing in a small game with some of my friend's. One of them has never even played poker before and deciedes hes in. Well heres whats goin on. He picks up 7 3 of clubs in the whole. I have pocket fours. flop comes 8 3 3 I go all in thinking maybe he was holding a couple of off suit high hole cards. Anyways I move all in thinking he will fold. Little do I know hes holding a 7 3 suited clubs in his hand. He callls we flip next two cards are another 8 and a 10 of spades. I lose!!! O well should I be playing games against people who hold onto every hand and call any bet or should I only play games where were playing for a lot more money like 30-40 dollars to come to the table leaving me the chance to catch much better cards. We normally play what the dealer wants and my specialty games are 7 card stud and hold'em I prefer holdem because its the main game I focus on but we always end up playing follow the queen or midnight baseball only seeing about 2 hands of holdem per game. In my experience Ive learned that midnight baseball and follow the queen are very very lucky games and not very skillful. Should I be focusing on games like this if I hope to play professionally some day. And should I be playing with these people. | ||

| Three comments. First, if you can't beat bad players, you can't expect to beat good players. Second, while midnight baseball and follow the queen have significantly larger luck factors, there is still an element of skill in them. There aren't texts written on them, of course, so you have to use your basic poker skill to beat them, but you can still play them profitably. Third, if you're moving in with 44 on a 8 3 3 board against opponents you know to play any two cards, you are making a significant error. If I were playing against you, and I knew you were going to pay me off if the flop clobbered me, I'd be playing just about any 2 cards as well. Think about that. Lee | ||

| Against bad players you really have to expect they are playing with bad hands. If there is a pair on the flop, there is always a chance that someone with trip it no matter how crappy that pair is. Not something you want to go all in against. If you have lots of crappy players at the table, the threat is that much greater for each player on the table. In this case, I would be worried about going all in with anything less than the nuts. But the good thing is a bad player will usually call your nut all-in with a second or third best hand (or even worse)... Just be patient with bad players, pick them apart slowly with your good hands slowly building up your stack and when you hit the nuts... put them out of the game. | ||
