Busted! NL tournament hand I regret, stein, 18. Sep 2003 17:52 | ||

| Just played and busted out early from a £50 (re-buy) NLHE tournament (Live Game) and left undecided as to whether I was unlucky or whether I played badly. Everyone began with T2000 and the blinds were T25/50. We are on about the sixth/seventh hand and despite a couple of tussles with 'Mr. X' (A player I hadnt played with before) I remain on approx T2000. He seems a player who likes to get involved with pots but rarely bluffs - that at least was my early feeling. I'm on the button and pick up KK. There are a few callers before me including Mr. X. I raise it up to T300 (approx the pot) and am only called by Mr.'X. The flop brings 2c 4c 9d. Mr. X checks to me and I bet T700. He proceeds to move in with little hesitation. Despite an overwhelming expectancy that I was to soon be staring at three 9s I duly call. In fact it is three 4s that confront me and I take to the exit. Was I stupid or unlucky? I certainly felt that ESP you get in poker that I was 'beat' - but by what?? Essentially if I fold I'm putting him on a set (I rule AA out almost entirely). And therefore under the same logic should have been folding a set of deuces in the same senario. That just seems overtight. Or is it?! I'm confused. Have a made a bad call? Was it one of those ultimate school boy errors of calling when I 'knew' I was beat? Was a call correct because he might have been back-raising with Tc9c's or TT - QQ or even A-9? I need reassurance. Much appreciated. Stein. | ||

| Hey stein, I had the same thing happen to me in a game. I had pocket Kings and I lost most of my money. After I reevaluated the play, I realized that moving all in was wrong. It is possible that someone can flop a set and slowplay. Who doesn't slowplay a set after the flop? Most of the people I know do. If he moved in w/o hesitation, that was your first tell that he had a monster. If he did have two clubs, then he got by with one. You just wait til your hand comes and toy with him. My rule of thumb, move all in only when you have the nuts or if you feel ballsy and know you can at least beat the other player with nothing or a high pair. However, when I played I had some more money left over and I think that helped my game overall because I now play better and take into account all the possibilities of hands that people can have. | ||

| For me, the overiding reason why I would lay down the KK here is because it is so early in the tournament that it is too risky to call off all of your chips. In fact, I would have probably needed at least middle set to call this all-in which is very tight play, but my style in tournaments. You simply don't win anything by taking a chance like this with your overpair. And, it is too for someone to risk all of his chips without a strong hand. If you were depper in the tournament and X was a short stack that needed to double through, then I think you may need to call him down. But, this early you have to fold. This again illustrates the example in NL of "A bettor or a raiser be, a caller never be." | ||

| Raise or fold... that is wisdom, or at least for me, to play by. After adapting that to the play book, my game became much stronger. I've made the same mistake (someone flopping a set and calling them, but with top two pair) and after looking at the way I played it, and while playing it, I knew they had the set and I called, busted out 11th. If they are betting into you that heavy after checking... something is up, and you only had two outs to save you. | ||

| Seems to me that, knowing nothing about your opponent, you should have considered laying down your pocket Kings. Sure, it is hard to do, but it was still very early in the tournament, when you can not win the tournament on this hand, you certainly can lose it. | ||
