| I see talk in posts from professionals about winning a certain number of BB (Big Bets, not big blinds) per hour...and about 10 BB per session. I play $6-12 B&M ring games. What is considered a Big Bet? (It's part of the lingo I haven't picked up yet.) | ||

| Big Bet is the higher amount used in a limit game, in your example in a 6-12 game a big bet would be 12 | ||

| Thanks for the replies. I KNEW that $12 is a Big Bet. I guess what I was trying to ask was "What do professionals mean by winning one big bet per hour?" OR having a goal of 10 BB per session? Is it just like it sounds? They want to average winning one big bet per hour? So if I'm playing $6-12 that's $12 per hour, that's not a great wage...but the assumption is pro's play at the higher level...like $30-60 or so...so $60 per hour ain't a bad target. Am I understanding this correctly? -Urban "If you're dumb, surround yourself with smart people; and if you're smart, surround yourself with smart people who disagree with you. " | ||

| you got it....if someone is refering to a win rate of "big bets per hour" they are refering to their average hourly winnings (earnings if you are a pro, I guess) divided by the big bet amount in the limits they are playing. My understanding is that in a Brick and Mortar casino 3 BB's per hour over the long term is excellent. | ||

| It's about 1 BB (or $20) per hour that's an adequate benchmark for $10-$20 limit. It's only a benchmark though, and should really be viewed as a goal over time - not specific sessions. Still if you go higher and play regularly, that benchmark now represents what one of the very best players at that limit might achieve, most full time players will not do quite that well. $40-$50 per hour over several hundred hours at $30-$60 is quality play for an experienced pro. At limits lower than $10-$20, an expert might achieve 1-1/2 to 2 BBs / hr. even though the card room drop is going to be proportionaly higher just due to more serious mistakes by many players. First you have to be able to beat whatever limit you are playing consistently for these benchmarks to even be applicable. As for such artificial goals of trying to make 10 BBs per session, that's pure garbage. You have to be able to walk away with a loss when it isn't happening that day. If you can't do this because you think you have to reach your goal, you're going to occasionally take some real beatings that can wipe out weeks of hard work. True, you can sometimes grind it out and turn a substantial loss into a winning session - but you'll be playing while you are tired and not at your best. Better to rest and come back again when you are fresh. Even if the game looks like it has total nitwits, you are in a bad situation psychologically. They don't even have to be paying attention to see that you are losing. Since you are losing, they will be much more likely to be there at the river to run you down than against someone who has been winning. I never want to be in a position where an open seat is taken by a bad player, and they think I could be losing. That's why I'll always buy in for enough chips in a live limit game that if I have to absorb several hits early, it still looks like I might be ahead. It doesn't mean I'm going to play them all, it's just that they are in front of me. | ||

| Thanks Andrew...that makes lots of sense. For now, I'm still playing part-time with small goals...sitting down at $6-12 for 2-4 hours a few times a week with $200 and trying to play my best, hoping to walk away up $200-$400 each time. So I'm working with a limited scope because my bankroll is VERY limited. (I can harldy even refer to it as a bankroll! LOL) But I'm using this to test myself as an improving player to see if I can play (and win) with some consitency. You've given me a lot to add to my perception of the game and those goals. Thanks! -Urban "If you're dumb, surround yourself with smart people; and if you're smart, surround yourself with smart people who disagree with you. " | ||

| If you should find yourself up 200-300 from a previous 6-12 session, I'd suggest you buy-in for the whole 400-500 next time. It's always an advantage for a disciplined player to have an excess of chips on the table. As long as you realize you don't have to get it back the same day if you get stuck 100-200 and can walk away from the table with the rest of your chips, this method is preferable. Try not to let your opponents know that they might be able to break you in a couple of hands if you are already stuck 100 from a 200 buy-in. By puting it all on the table at once, you never have to let them see you sweat. | ||
