Quick question - Ax vs. A?, Machinegun68, 18. Sep 2003 01:52

We play a stupid game called "no-peek" occasionally. In this game a card is flipped up from the deck and the player first to act has to beat that card by flipping up 7 cards (no peeking) until he does so.

This dilemma could apply to other poker games as well. If the card a player has to beat is an A, does a board like A36 beat the A?

What I'm essentially asking is, does A2 (Ace with any kicker) "beat" a single A?

My opinion is that the single Ace must be treated as Ax and that kickers should not matter. Only a pair or better may beat the Ace - not just another ace with a kicker. I know this is kind of a weird question, but does an Ace with a kicker "beat" a single Ace in no-peek or just in general?

As soon as someone else gets the A then the next card beats the ace. Of if there are already cards out
and he gets the ace hes already got your lone ace beat. It really doesn't matter as if hes got a8 all you got to
do is get a 9 and you got him beat. However this game kind of seems boring to me as there is no skill
involved. Whoever is luckiest wins.

Only on Tuesdays before 6pm after that it depends on whether or not the dealer has blonde hair if they do then yes. if they have grey or black hair then no and if it is brown then maybe. Also if you are playing the game during a month with a J in it then the opposite is true UNLESS it is a leap year in which case all aces are wild before 3pm and all red aces are counted as kings if the dealer is left handed.

Hope this helps clarify,

PS I would say acex beats a single ace.

this is very similar to midnight baseball..... and Ace-anything beats Ace- no other cards showing.
it's the same as if you were playing seven-card stud and you had AKQJ5 and he had AKQJ4. you wouldn't be looking for a pair requirement to beat him then, would you? your 5 beats his 4.

We play that sometimes at my home game too. We decided that "no peek" is just too dorky of a name for a poker game. Now we call it "shut eye".

It's a huge disadvantage to act late in the hand in this game, it costs WAY to much to see your cards, so you should NEVER be the one who calls it. Strangely enough, you might want to be in middle position. UTG is terrible position because you won't see many of your cards, and even if turn a strong pair on the first two cards, you likely won't get paid much unless people are in a gambling mood.

It's funny, you wouldn't think there would be any strategy to such a stupid (but fun) game, but there is.

Thanks guys. Looks like I was wrong (not surprising).

I will never play no-peek again however regardless of the rule. I simply hate to ante without seeing any cards :-)
