How do you handle hands this bad?, dakota59, 17. Sep 2003 23:22 | ||

| Was in a $50/5 NLHE Tourney, and didn't receive a single hand worth calling the blind on, much less trying to win a hand! How do you guys handle this? Do you lower your starting limits, or just continue trying to get a decent hand to play while the blinds eat you alive. At the end, I tried going with a mediocre hand, then going all in before losing everything to the blinds, (and lost) but wondering if I could have done something different. Only 2 faces cards the entire time, and they were paired with very low cards. Frustrating! | ||

| In Skalansky's Tournament Poker for Advanced Players, he describes how to handle the situation, just keep waiting. He makes his case by showing why you shouldn't make a bad bet or take long odds (like playing weak hands), because it could impair your opportunity to make a good bet with great odds later. for example, you should throw away a poor/mediocre hand UTG even if you will be all-in on the BB. While you might end up with garbage in the BB, you might also end up with a premium hand, you won't know unless you wait and see. But if you go all-in on a mediocre hand UTG, what do you expect to happen? The discussion is pretty in depth and much better and descriptive than what i have just written, but the point is you should play your solid game and if you get blinded out, so be. Then you can blame the cards. Who can you blame if you go out playing trash? Mark | ||

| Mark, thank you very much. This was pretty much the answer I thought I'd get, but your thoughtful answer will go a long way in solidifying my position from now on. I'll just realize that the poker gods were against me that night, in spite of my best efforts. Thanks again, that was an impessive and realistic explanation. That's what makes UPF a great place to visit. | ||

| I played in a NL tourny on pokerpages yesterday (start with 10k chips) where I never went above 12,450 chips. I couldn't get anything playable but that made my table image pretty solid (little did they know I was consistently folding crap; not being selective) so I was able to bet out every once in a while and I was usually given credit. I had to go all in three times with less than 5k in chips but I just waited on my hand. I finally lost on an all in with Q-Q with just over 10k in chips and finished 88th of 500+. I'm very proud of that finish and it re-emphasises good choices of starting hands and playing every hand correctly, and, most importantly, making the most of your hand when you have one. Just keep waiting- you'll get a hand eventually. | ||

| You maintain focus and discipline through the bad spell....You do NOT lower your standards.....When you are catching blanks sometimes your image with your opponents changes and you can take advantage of the change in image by playing more aggressive is select spots.....But that would be the ONLY time I would change my game in that situation. Life is Good :-) Roy Cooke on 17. Sep 2003 23:22 dakota59 wrote: > Was in a $50/5 NLHE Tourney, and didn't receive a single hand worth calling the > blind on, much less trying to win a hand! | If you play every hand correctly, the cards will determine if you win or lose. Sometimes you just don't get the cards. Stick to your game and if you happen to drop the ball, then don't worry about it. It happens to everyone. Lee | ||

| Everyone runs "cold" at some time or other. You simply have to continue to be selectively aggressive with your starting requirements until it gets to the point where the blinds are so high that you are in danger of being eliminated. Then, I would favor going out with a bang, rather than with a whimper. | ||
