tells or odds..what do you think, MrTeLLnj, 17. Sep 2003 22:15

I find tells to be more of an advantage in poker than knowing your chances of getting a card at the end. In a way its erelavent because you have no idea if someone else has the card you need and folded it or if its next, pluss all the so called odds and percenteges are done from compture. So in reality your running on luck unless you can see whats left in the deck of cars. Its like the question what are the chaces there is an afterlife.( no affence to anyone) not like I would take the chance to find out. Plus if your in a situation of drawing that last CARD OF VICTORY your better off loosing ,, or very luck.

So in my opinion playing the person and knowing how to look for tells has a much better advantage. Anyway im not very good at math so why bother......i mean 220 to 1 odds you will get pocket aces. Well i got them 2 times in about an hour once....and there is no way that is 220 deals to 1 .....LUCK ....tells are better.

What do I think? I think you're wrong and you don't have a good understanding of what odds really mean to the game of poker. Nobody disputes that "playing the player" is important, but for some reason you think that the idea of playing odds vs. playing the players are mutually exclusive, when both are very important components of the game. Sounds like you want one thing to be true since by your own admission you're not good at math, but to be truly successful you have to at least have a decent understanding of odds- not just what the odds are but what the concept of odds means

I completely disagree, especially if you are playing limit, ring-game poker (Pot Limit and No Limit are more debatable). No doubt, if you are a great hand reader, that will win you pots in your career (or save you $$ from making calls that you otherwise would have made) that will add to your bottom line. But the simple fact is that most of poker (again, limit, ring-game) is math pure and simple. If the pot id laying you proper odds to call, you should WHETHER OR NOT THE CARD COMES. You MAKE MONEY every time you make a call with proper or better than proper odds.

No offense to you MrTELL, but I think you need to do some serious study on the game and read what the experts (Sklansky, Malmuth, etc.) have to say. They live off of poker income for the most part and bottom line they agree that even if you are one of the greatest "feel" players of all time, you will be a losing player in the long run if you don't pay attention to the math of the game.

Good luck.

Steve

I think both Odds and Tells should be learned by all serious players. Both are important. You need to be able to figure out pot odds in order to make correct decisions on play of hands.....That said, if you have reliable tells on a given play you will own him! And owning an opponent can be a lot of fun :-)!

Life is Good :-)
