Another O8 hand, Schuster, 17. Sep 2003 14:31

Feel free to rip this hand apart, I'm not sure if I played it right or not.

Playing pot limit O8 again and I limp in the cutoff with As 2s Jd Th after 3 limpers. The button folds and both blinds call. The flop is 3 4 6 rainbow, one spade. The pot is $3.00, I've got about $35 in front of me. I bet $1.50 to see where everyone is at. The big blind calls, and now a middle player raises it to $4.50. Another middle player calls, I call, and the big blind calls. The turn is the Td, putting a 2 flush on board. There's about $19.50 in the pot. The big blind has about $6.00 left, the middle raiser only has $5.00 left, and the other middle player has me covered. It's checked to me and I bet the pot, figuring I have the nut low and something to show down for high. The big blind calls all in as does the middle raiser, and the other middle player folds. The river is a jack and I take 3/4 of the pot.

I definitely like your bet on the turn.

As for the flop, due to my lack of PLO8 experience, I'm not sure whether a bet or a check is the best play here. I might be inclined to check for a couple of reasons: first, if you bet and one guy checkraises the pot, its a tough call for you. Second, by checking the nut low, you may induce your opponents to make a mistake on a later street - calling with A5 or something similar. Also, I think its unlikely that most players would check the nut low twice, so if it gets checked to you on the turn, I think you can be pretty confident that you're the only one holding it. Of course, there is plenty to be said for betting the flop and taking down the pot right there. Knowing your opponents styles is probably a pretty important factor in making the right decision here.

I think it's good that you waited until the turn before committing serious chips to the pot, it would be wrong to get too involved with two cards to come that could counterfeit you and give the pot to someone else. Getting it in on the turn is good because it's one less card that can ruin your low and also, one less card that could give someone else a lock for high. Anyway, a big bet is good here because it could drive someone off a marginal high, and take down the whole pot for you. Or it could drop someone who has A2 with no high, who doesn't want to get quartered. If it doesn't, you at least have the insurance of a nut low.

Good play!

Lee your play sounds good to me. I would have bet the turn even if the 10 (a nice card for your hand) didn't hit. I say this because only one opponent has you covered and so even in the case that you are not the only A2 out there you will be unlikely to cause much damage to yourself. The situation changes dramatically if two or more of your opponents are deep in chips. I would still bet when the 10 came but I would certainly check without at least top pair and the nut low since you will likely be sharing low AND you have no low card backup to save you if an ace or deuce rolls off on the river. I think you played it well and I hope these considerations make it clearer for you. Good luck!!! GRANT PITTMAN

Sounds to me like you got maximum value for your hand in this spot. Pot-limit is a very tricky game to play optimally, much more complex than limit. I say, well done.
