When to be aggressive in PLO8 tourney hand?, jaustin, 17. Sep 2003 06:48 | ||

| I've recently started playing O8 and was looking for some advice on how to best play this hand: I get dealt QQTT double suited and limp from a late position (four players) - blinds are 15/30 and I've only played my blind hands so have almost my starting stack. Flop comes 24T two diamonds. Early player bets 60 and everyone calls to me, I call. Thought about betting the pot with the best possible hand, but figured a player with a low draw and two diamonds would call, which could bust me out. By calling I planned to see another card cheap and then decide what to do. Turn is a 9 (not diamond), which is about the best card I could have hoped for as I have the current nut high hand and there is no low yet. Checked to me and I bet the pot (375 out of my stack of 900). Two callers. Turn is a diamond and I lose the pot. I don't think I really misplayed it, but was being aggressive on the turn the right move? I could have seen the river card for free and then decided whether to bet big, or alternatively raised the pot on the flop. I guess my question in general is - when is the right time to make your big bet in PLO8 when you flop a great hand that could be outdrawn? | ||

| ADAM HAS DECIDED TO GRACE YOU, WITH HIS ANSWER. FIRST OF ALL, IN HIGH-LOW OMAHA EIGHT OR BETTER FOR LOW. (WHY CAN'T THE REST OF THE WORLD, DESPENSE WITH ABBREVIATIONS, IT WOULD BE SO MUCH EASIER FOR ME TO KNOW WHAT THEY'RE SAYING) YOUR QQ1010, IS BARELY, BARELY PLAYABLE. YOU MUST HIT SOME PERFECT FLOP, SUCH AS Q 99, OR SOMETHING WHERE THERE IS NO POSSIBLE LOW DRAW. ANY HAND WITHOUT AN ACE, IS MEDIOCRE, AT BEST. AND, ANY HAND THAT ONLY HAS ONE WAY TO GO, IS WEAK. OMAHA, WHETHER HIGH, OR HIGH, IS ALL ABOUT THE REDRAW. JUST LIKE YOU HAVE TWO LUNGS, COPS HAVE TWO GUNS, ETC. FRANKLY, YOU SHOULD HAVE JUST CALLED THE SIXTY, AND IF THE BOARD DOESN'T PAIR, YOU'RE DONE WITH IT. BUT, THE FIRST QUESTION I WILL ASK IS: WHAT IN THE $#^@^$!#% WERE YOU DOING PLAYING THIS HAND IN THE FIRST PLACE??!! MAYBE, MAYBE, IF YOU HAD SOME GIANT AMOUNT OF CHIPS, BUT EVEN THEN, YOU NEED A PERFECT FLOP, AND THE SAD FACT OF LIFE IS: THERE ARE ALMOST NO PERFECT FLOPS FOR THIS HAND!!!!!!! NEXT TIME, THROW THAT TRASH WHERE IT BELONGS, (THE MUCK) AND HOPE FOR A PLAYABLE HAND. THE ONLY TIME THIS HAND IS PLAYABLE IN HIGH LOW, IS IF IT IS A LIMIT GAME, WITH A VERY BIG JACKPOT, AND YOU COULD WIN FIVE OR TEN GRAND, FOR LOSING ON QUADS, AND YOU CAN'T LOSE MUCH, WHEN YOU MISS. TO HELP YOU WITH OMAHA HIGH - LOW, I WILL GIVE YOU A LINE FROM THE POEM THAT STARTED MY 1993 BOOK ON OMAHA: "tHE ACE IS KING, WITHOUT ONE, AT BEST, YOU'RE MEDIOCRE. IT'S IMPORTANCE IS MORE SIGNIFICANT, THEN IN ANY FORM OF POKER. THERE ARE A FEW HANDS IN OMAHA HIGH LOW, THAT ARE PLAYABLE WITHOUT AN ACE, BUT THAT'S AS FAR AS THEY GO, PLAYABLE. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE ANY GREAT POWER, WITHOUT AN ACE. (NOTE: THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE ONE, THAT THE HAND IS PLAYABLE) MAYBE SOMEDAY I'LL GO INSANE, AND WRITE A BOOK FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC, THEN YOU WILL SEE THE ULTIMATE WORK ON THE SUBJECT. BUT I DOUBT THAT THIS WILL EVER HAPPEN. | ||
