| There is a very interesting editorial in the WSJ today (9/17) discussing the Jayson Blair case entitled "My Master's House" (page A26). While not totally related to our thread the other day, it does bring up a lot of the same thoughts and ideas that we spoke of from a conservative viewpoint (sorry noise). Just thought I would continue to fuel the "idea sharing". :) Steve | ||

| That whole Jayson Blair thing definitely shows the downside of "trying to level the playing field" in that some people will abuse the system. It always kills me when people do this, because it really takes away from the good purpose that affirmative action is trying to accomplish. A good example of affirmative action working properly is the military, one of the most diverse institutions in the US (even with the exception of excluding gays), where you wouldn't have people at the level of top brass like Colin Powell without it. What's happened at the NYTs is symptomatic of the tabloidization of mainstream news as a whole. There is very little fact-checking going on at our major newspapers and our major news networks, especially the cable news and syndicated papers. Both Fox and CNN, for instance, reported many things during the Iraq war that turned out to be exaggerated, mere rumors, or just completely false. Ratings over accuracy and credibility. Anyway, they could at least preface something with "We have unconfirmed reports that..." or something like that. How many times did Fox and CNN report that we had found WMDs only to backtrack later, oops it's just a medicine factory, or whatever? Either side of the fence you are on, I think we can agree that there needs to be reform of how we get our news. If people can't trust the media to report freely and accurately, then how can we call this a democracy? We might as well have a state-run media like Pravda. Even so-called "liberal" news sources like public television's news are biased by who their donors are. The MacNeil Lehrer Newshour has Montesanto and ADM as sponsors. Have you ever heard them criticize big agri-business? Have they ever talked about the plight of the family farmer? Frankenfoods? I don't think so. You'd be about as likely to hear that as you would be to hear Sean Hannity decry Bush's dodging of service in Viet Nam. Anyway, I'm just going off on one of my rants, the NYTs has become a joke, but it's still a lot better than most of the papers here on the West Coast. The SF Chronicle, the "Comical" as I like to call it, is pathetic. The San Jose Mercury News is about the only decent paper around in CA. | ||

| The immediate news that we all crave over the internet has certainly fueled the need to get stories out sooner, and the subsequent failure to check facts properly. But, in my opinion, the Jayson Blair tale goes deeper to illustrate the sickening depths people will go to in order to avoid blame and take personal responsibility. I would've had more respect for Blair if he had come out and said, "I didn't really like my job, so I made stuff up, and finally got caught." No, he has to play the race card and shift the blame to some faceless ambiguous group of corporate managers who oppressed him, and "made" him fabricate stories. Not having completed college, nor being African American, nor the fact that the Cosby Show was cancelled before he was old enough to watch it (to quote the article) is the true reason for why Blair did what he did. There are plenty of caucasian, latino, and asian liars out there. He did it because he didn't care what the implications could be - didn't care if people got hurt, and he thought he could get away with it. From everything I've heard, he ENJOYED getting away with it for a while. The fact that a major publishing house is forking over a huge advance to hear his story just reaffirms P.T. Barnum's saying. | ||

| yeah, the fact that he thinks that lying to everybody is just a joke tells me that he's got some serious problems. | ||

| I'd be a little concerned with the conversion to a state-run media like Pravda, even when said in jest. There's no perfect system, nor will there ever be. It could be better, to be sure. Print reporters compete for column inches, TV reporters compete for airtime minutes, so the news HAS to be sensationalized as much as possible and reach the public before the competition, hence the need to ignore any substantial check for veracity. But while Jayson Blair was writing these articles, just what was his editor doing? Could have there been any suspicion on his/her part that the stories could have been false? You'll never know and you'll never find out, as the paper will hide any internal investigation into the affair behind their First Amendment rights. No real solution from this end..... | ||
