| The Scenario . . . Live NLHE satellite tournament. 266 total participants, top 20 finshers win a $1,000 seat to a major tournament in October. 60 players left, and I have $6,500 in front of me. Blinds are $1000/$2000, and I'm two to the left of the big blind. Tournament clock says that blinds are going up to $2,000/$4,000 in six minutes. 10 players at my table, I'm third shortest stack. Two players to my immediate left will be blinded out within 5 hands if they don't catch something. If I don't play one of the next three hands, my stack shrinks to $3,500, with the $2,000/$4,000 blinds just around the corner. The Hand . . . Cards are dealt, first guy to act goes in for $4,000. He's the big dog at the table, with over $60,000 in chips. For the last 5 hands or so he's been chasing people away with oversized bets. The one time he was called he flipped over 10-9 offsuit and was beaten handily. I peek at my hand--KQ offsuit. I figure it's now or never, and push all in with my $6,500. One guy in late position with $10,000 left calls. Not a good sign. Chip leader also calls. Flop comes out 8-Q-5. Sweet. I've now got top pair with a K kicker. Late position goes all in with his remaining $3,500, and the table gorilla calls. Chip leader flips over A-10. Whew. I nervously flip over KQ. Late position caller shows me QA offsuit. Dammit. Need a King on the Turn or River, don't get it, I'm out of the tournament--56th place. Thoughts? | ||

| Wow, this one could go either way. You got your chips in with a decent if not overpowering hand and you needed to double up soon or it wouldn't mean anything. I guess the only reason that I might have layed it down was because the big dog was already in and you knew he would pretty much call you with anything so there was little chance that you would be able to steal. If you were closer to the top 20, I might have considered laying this down, but since you still had a ways to go I think pushing in was the best play. You just got unlucky that the guy on the button had AQ. | ||

| I wouldn't call it a bad beat or a bad play. Your shortstacked and thats probably going to be the best hand you get before you run out of money. You have to make a move then. I was suprised that ace queen called with 2 players in the hand already he must of been suited. Maybe you get lucky and catch a better hand later on but I doubt it odds aren't good . I think you made the right move just ran into a better hand it happens. Better luck next time. | ||

| Bart, You did the right thing. When you get short stacked it is imperative (IMO) to make a move while you have enough chips to have a positive impact. KQo, although it isn't the strongest holding, is a solid hand and gives you an ample opportunity to double up and stay alive. The worst thing that happened to you is the late position player staying in. You tried to isolate the bully at the table and it just didn't work; if it did, who knows you might be telling us your "good fortune" story. Better Luck Will | ||
