Am I ready to move up?, iceman5, 16. Sep 2003 22:34

Ive only been playing Hold Em for a couple months, but Ive played non stop. Ive learned alot by reading a couple books, reading this forum and of course playing about 7000 hands. Since I switched to NL my record is quite good I believe and Im wondering if its time to move up to a slightly higher game. Playing .10/.25 NL with $25 max stakes on PokerStars, Ive averaged $12.50/hr in 2500 hands. Also Ive played (70) 1 table sit and gos. Ive played mostly $10 sit and gos but also a few $5's and a few $20's. Ive been in the money in 58% of them and I won 35%. So I ask the experts if you think Im ready to move up to the next levels. I hope this doesnt sound like bragging. I just want an honest assessment of my results.

Hi,

Sure, why not. You can move up to the next limit, as long as you feel comfortable/confident making the same (good) 'plays', (decisions, strategic plays, "reads", etc. etc.). You've shown some pretty good results and although they are based on short term......if you're bankroll is a little bit bigger now, I think moving up to a slightly higher limit would be fine. If you find that you're not doing as well, then you can always move back down; and if you 'do' show good results there, then you can move up to the next level, so on and so on. As long as you're better than your competition and your bankroll can....withstand "the heat" that is needed when you *do* go through some losing streaks, and/or you have good means of replenishing it, then yeah, I would go for it. You've kept really good records.......make sure you continue to do so.

Good luck.

WELL, FIRST OFF THE NUMBER OF HANDS YOU HAVE PLAYED
EXTRAPOLATES TO ONLY ABOUT FORTY OR SO HOURS.

THIS IS NOT LONG ENOUGH, FOR AN ACCURATE INDICATION
OF WHAT YOUR LONG-TERM HOURLY WIN RATE WIL BE.

BUT, IT IS REASONABLY SUFFICIENT, TO INDICATE THAT YOU
PROBABLY ARE NOW IN THE MUCH-COVETED RANKS, OF

'WINNING PLAYERS'

BUT, THIS IS ONLY ONE OF THE GUIDELINES FOR DECIDING
WHETHER OR NOT TO "MOVE UP"

YOU DID NOT MENTION WHAT YOUR PLAYING BANKROLL IS ! !

THIS IS JUST AS IF NOT MORE, IMPORTANT THAN YOUR SKILL
LEVEL.

IN FACT, I'D SAY THAT IT IS MORE IMPORTANT, AS PLAYERS AT
THE HIGHEST LIMIT GAMES ON MOST SITES, ARE EVEN
WORSE THAN THE MICRO LIMIT PLAYERS. (THE ONES WHO
PLAY BADLY,)
I THINK EDDIE MURPHY SAID IT BEST "PEOPLE GET SOME
MONEY, IT MESSES WITH THEIR MINDS'

NEXT, WE MUST EXPLORE JUST WHAT IS YOUR GOAL IN POKER?

HOPEFULLY YOU WON'T SAY "FULL TIME PROFESSIONAL, NO
OTHER SOURCE OF INCOME"

ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE.

PART TIME BUSINESS, TO BRING IN EXTRA MONEY.

ONE THOUSAND TIMES EASIER.

WHEN YOU WIN, DO YOU TAKE THE MONEY OUT, TO PAY BILLS?

IF SO, YOU HAD BETTER NOT MOVE UP.

12.50 PER HOUR (NOT YET FIRMLY ESTABLISHED BY A
SUFFICIENTLY LARGE NUMBER OF HOURS, GENERALLY
ACCEPTED MINIMUM=1000 HOURS, OR A HALF YEAR) MAY
NOT BUY MUCH IN THE REAL WORLD, BUT FOR A GAME WHERE
THE BIG BLIND IS TWO BITS, IS AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF

MONEY.

ACTUALLY, YOU ARE MAKING EXACTLY WHAT I ESTIMATED
SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, THAT A GOOD PLAYER WOULD MAKE
IN THIS GAME.

ONE HALF OF A MAX BUY IN, PER HOUR.

ICEMAN, DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE MY LAST STUDENT MADE.

FOUR MONTHS AGO, I TOOK ON A PRO BONO STUDENT. HE

REALLY NEEDED TO MAKE MONEY, SO I SENT HIM SOME

LENGTHY EMAIL LESSONS, DETAILING THE REALITIES OF

POKER, HOLD EM, AND NO LIMIT HOLD EM. FOLLOWING

MY TEACHINGS ( WHICH HE SAID WERE AWESOME) HE

TOOK HIS REMAINING $25, TO OVER TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS,

PLAYING THE EXACT SAME GAME YOU ARE PLAYING.

THEN, GOING AGAINST WHAT I VERY, VERY SPECIFICALLY

WARNED HIM NOT TO DO, HE JUMPED UP TO THE 1-2 100 MAX

GAMES, AND BUSTED OUT.

I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM HIM SINCE. LIKE IT'S MY FAULT ! ! !

SIMPLE FORMULA: FOLLOW SENSI ADAM'S TEACHINGS,

SUCCEED, AND MAYBE EVEN GET RICH (MY BEST STUDENT

NOW MAKES A HIGH SIX FIGURE INCOME IN POKER, AND

WE'RE NOT TALKING JUST A COUPLE HUNDRED THOU, BUT

CLOSER TO A MILLION) DON'T EVEN ANYONE ASK WHO HE

IS, ROY COOKE KNOWS, BUT HE WON'T TELL EITHER.

ACTUALLY, THE GUY WAS ALREADY VERY GOOD WHEN HE

MET ME, I JUST HELPED HIM GET MUCH BETTER. HE CREDITS

ME WITH TEACHING HIM MORE THAN ANYONE.

DON'T FOLLOW SENSI ADAM'S ADVICE: GO TO POORHOUSE

YES, I AM THE MOST ARROGENT COCKY, OPNIONATED S. O. B.

IN THE ENTIRE WORLD, BUT I HAVE THE TALENT AND

(CORRECT) KNOWLEDGE TO BACK ME UP.

SO FOR NOW, IF YOU HAVE AT LEAST A 1500 DOLLAR BANKROLL,

(ONE STACK A DAY, FOR THIRTY DAYS, SHOULD ENSURE

LONG-TERM SURVIVAL) YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION TO

BUMP UP TO THE FIFTY DOLLAR GAMES, THE PLAYERS ARE

ALMOST AS BAD.

BUT, IF I EVER CATCH YOU IN THE HUNDRED DOLLAR GAME,

NO MORE LESSONS FOR YOU.

ALSO, SHOULD YOU DROP DOWN A THIRD OF YOUR BANKROLL,

IT'S TIME TO REASSESS WHETHER YOU ARE PLAYING WELL

ENOUGH FOR THIS HIGHER LEVEL, AND DROP BACK FOR A

WHILE.

THE FAILURE TO STEP DOWN IN LIMIT, WHEN NOT DOING WELL

IN A HIGHER LIMIT, HAS CRUSHED THE HOPES OF MORE PLAYERS, THAN THERE ARE STARS IN THE SKY.

WHY JUST LAST WEEK, I, ADAM THE EXPERT ACTUALLY HAD TO

SUFFER THE DISGRACE OF DROPPING DOWN TO THE FIFTY

DOLLAR SINGLE TABLES, FOR A DAY, AFTER GOING ON TILT,

UNTIL I WAS PLAYING NORMALLY AGAIN.

WITHIN TWO DAYS, I WAS BACK IN MY NORMAL GAMES. HAD

I NOT STOPPED, SLOWED DOWN AND STEPPED DOWN, I

MAY HAVE TILTED OFF SO MUCH OF MY BANKROLL, THAT I

MIGHT ACTUALLY HAVE (HORRORS OF HORRORS) HAD TO

GO BACK "IN THE BOX" AGAIN.

SO PLEASE, ICEMAN, DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AS HAVE

SO MANY BEFORE YOU. STEPPING UP IN LIMITS, IS AS IMPORTANT

AS A MAJOR LIFE DECISION, SUCH AS GETTING MARRIED OR

SWITCHING CAREERS, AND AS SUCH, IS NOT TO BE TAKEN

LIGHTLY, AND MUST BE CAREFULLY PLANNED AND EXECUTED.

Adam, thanks for the detailed response. I agree with everything you said. I did forget to mention my goals and my bankroll. My goal is to play a couple hours a day, mostly for the fun and challenge of it but now that Im winning regularly, the money is nice also. I started with $200 and grew it to about $1200. I took the original $200 out to make sure the website was honest and sent my money back in a timely fashion. So I have $1000 now. I have plenty more if I need it though. I would be interested in some of your "detailed emails" if you still have any of them saved. Thanks for the advice.

Your "G" is about right for a 2-4 stand alone Bank. Stay where you are till it becomes 2 or 3 G's. That way if you move up and get poked for a "G" or two your not back on your heels but back in your old game.

I'VE ANSWERED YOU ICEMAN.

WANT TO GO BACK TO THE CAB, BY ALL MEANS, MOVE UP.

THIS IS NOT AN INSULT, BUT THE REALITY OF POKER.

THE NOTION OF YOU MOVING UP, WITHOUT AT LEAST SIX

OR EIGHT HUNDRED BANKROLL, IS LIKE GIVING A MONKEY

MATCHES AND DYNAMITE.

I'VE WARNED YOU WHAT COULD HAPPEN. TODAY, I PLACED

THIRD, IN A FIFTY DOLLAR LIMIT HOLD EM TOURNAMENT,

WON 1300. (ALMOST GOT FIRST, BUT GOT POCKET JACKS

BACK TO BACK HANDS, AND LOST ON BOTH)

SO, THESE THINGS CAN BE WON.

THEN YOU HAVE YOUR BANKROLL.

BUT, IF ALL YOU HAVE IS THE $200, PLEASE DON'T EVEN

THINK OF MOVING UP, UNLESS Y OU WANT TO BE

SAYING: THAT'LL BE THREE DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS,

PLEASE! FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE

ADAM THE EXPERT CARES ABOUT YOU, LISTEN AND BE

SUCCESSFUL.

FAIL TO LISTEN: BACK TO THE 12 HOUR DAYS, FOR FIFTY

BUCKS AND A PACK OF CIGS.
