Dominated hand - bad play, Michael C, 16. Sep 2003 17:26 | ||

| I have been playing HE for about 5 months and studying the game. I read about how AJ is sometimes a dominated hand. There is nothing like an example to bring home the concept. I was playing in a pokerschool play money satellite NLHE with 10 players. $2000 to start. It was early and the blinds were 25 and 50. I was BB. I held KJs and thought that was pretty good for BB. No one raised. The flop was 72J and I liked that so I bet $200 (my stack was $2700. UTG+1 raised $400 and it became heads up. I figured that I would force him to back down since I had seen this player bluff before and I had more chips than he did. He did not raise pre-flop so I figured he did not have a pp. Without a pp the only hand that could beat me was AJ. I raised him something like $1500 and he raised all in and I thought for a second and called what was left of my stack. After he showed me QQ and I did not get a J I thought about my bad play. He slow played me and it worked. Luck for him I did not have JJ or the BB with J7. I was now short stacked and did not win. Placed #7. The next game I came in #1 to make up for it. What hands could he have held that could beat me if he was not bluffing? He could most likely hold AA-77 and AK, AQ and AJ (11). The hands that could beat me were AA, KK, QQ, JJ, 77, AJ (6) and the hands that I could beat were AK, AQ and TT, 99 and 88 (5). I discounted hands like J7, J2 and 72. That means that the hands that he likely called the blind with (11) I could only beat 5. Of course, I should have thought of this before. If the flop had been 72K I would have been in a much better position (duh) since only AA, KK, 77 and AK could have beat me. Any comments of thoughts on how to play dominated hands except not to? And be careful not to lose all you chips in an unraised pot. Thanks | ||

| No doubt, your hand was a good pre-flop starting hand. However, once you bet the flop (correctly) and are raised, I think you need to shut down unless you improve. Top pair/second best kicker isn't a hand to risk all of your chips with,at least not this early in the tourny (if you were a short stack and it were later, then it would be a better play). So, I think the problem is that you way overplayed your hand on the flop. I would have either mucked when he raise or just called his raise to peel off a card and maybe hit a J or K. If nothing hits the turn, I would check/fold here because if he comes out betting on the turn, the chances are that he can beat top pair. One thing I have to constantly remind myself in NL tournaments is that you need to make the top three to win it. Not making moves with potential second best hands is the only way to be around at the end. Good luck. Steve | ||

| Thanks. Good advice as always. Just because they do not raise or they check does not mean that they do not have good cards. So the though process whould be something like - he raised me, how many hands can I beat? and if not at least the top 3 then consider call/fold. Trying to represent a better hand to make him release it did not work. Needed a much better hand. I will work on it. | ||
