| It seems as though river rats follow me to the tables...all morning long, whether it be a fh, 2p, pp aces, flush, 3 of a kind...I was beat every time by a river chaser. I was aggressive as soon as the flop hit and 2 people would follow me all the way down to the river. Thought I could shake them somehow but they kept on coming...on top of all of it, the worst was getting beat w 82 offsuit, while I was holding pp aces....i seem to have problems with ring games...should I just stick to tourneys? The table I was playing was a .50/1 fixed limit. Help! Kimmi :) | ||

| 1 session can't tell you one way or the other. stick to your game...the standard deviation gods must have gotten you today. When these sessions are happening (and they do at every limit, believe me), work on minimizing your losses by: 1. Saving that last call when you know you are beaten 2. NOT playing that marginal hand that you just saw another suck out on you with. 3. Making sure that you only draw with correct odds and not chasing that inside str8 draw only getting 5-1 on the flop. Keep the faith! Steve | ||

You may go back and fourth a bit until you decide which type of game may be the most profitable one for you, and that you may actually prefer 'more'.........but with a lot more playing time, you may also find limit ring games to be good for you, too. Patience and experience is the best way to make that decision. Some people just have a knack for tournament style play where others do better with limit poker. I personally prefer limit and do very well at it, but if I had to make a living from playing tournaments.....I'd be broke! It's just not my style. But that's why they offer all different forms of poker because everyone has their preference, and 'usually' a person will show more strength in one area than the other.....unless of course you're Phil Ivey!! Damn I hate that guy!! .........j/k Phil. 4P-

The table I was playing was a .50/1 > fixed limit. > > Help! > Kimmi :) 2 factors at work here. One, short term luck, two, selective memory. This might help---get a legal pad---make 3 columns---head one bad beats i got, another bad beats i didnt get, and the 3rd, bad beats i gave You aren't jinxed, the poker gods arent againt you ( they like pretty girls) and this will ease your wounds. Here's an example of the opposite: From the chip and a chair school . I had one T25 chip left in the big blind. Blinds were 100/200. I had QT o made a Khi srt8. Tied!! Now i had T50. Small blind KTo made a full house--- 3more forced all-ins without a pair. ! fullhouse, ! flush, and one 2p--all without a pocket pair. From there, I won the lil tourney So, i gave 5 bad beats in one tourney---all short term luck. Gary

| Dont know if it helps you at all but i play about 80% of my poker now in tournaments but that may just be because the selection of cash games in the UK are often limited and almost always pot/no limit. I found my skills were better honed towards tournaments and that my earn rate is a lot better. Of course the flip side of this is that i have gone five or ten tournaments at a time where i dont place in the money at all, expect a lot of swings in your bankroll ! Cheers CP on 16. | Kimmi, Days like that are frustrating and happen to all of us from time to time. The thing we must ALL remember is these "river rats" are who make us profitable poker players. If these players weren't at the tables we would not be able to make the money that is available. The numbers will even out over time and every time a player makes a bad call against you it adds to your long term EV. Better luck Will | ||

| But it sure stinks in the meantime, it's very discouraging for all. I just hope we can all be around long enough to see the river rats bankrupt. Most tight-aggressive players are only beaten when outdraw, the solution.......... wish i knew, bet hard and the pot becomes more lucrative to chase, check and give out free cards, guess the numbers will work out over time. | This happened to me yesterday too... I was down 30 big bets due to me missing every single flop. I'd have pocket aces and the board would come out KKQ with heavy betting followed by a T and a 8. Then I'd hit KK or QQ and every time an ace would flop with 4-5 people staying in. I didn't play any of these out (I would have lost anyway) and I folded right when I should have but I still lost 30 big bets. Half of them due to blinds, the other half due many, many flops that totally missed me. However, I kept at it and stayed there longer and my luck changed. I started getting great hand and hitting every flop. It got to the point that people were afraid when I raised pre-flop. Towards the end I was starting to raise some questionable hands pre-flop but I never had to show them since everyone was folding right away. Overall I finished up. Just keep going, wait it out. Stay tight and aggresive and it will eventually come around. When you are unlucky you can lose some. When your luck is normal, you should be winning slowly. When your luck is good, you should make a killing. The trick is to stay tight when losing, and get out as soon as you recognize that the odds are against you for winning. If that means folding 100 hands in a row then that's what you have to do. 100 pre-flop folds can cost you around 15 big bets in blinds - you might lose another 15 on great hands that miss the flop or by someone stealing the river. I don't think luck can get much worse than that. Those 30 big bets can come back fast on a loose table if you start getting good cards and hitting your flops. The amount you make on your average and good luck days will far outweigh anything you lose on the bad luck days if you can stay focused and avoid going on a tilt. | ||
