Casino Poker: When's the best time to play?, Bungus, 16. Sep 2003 10:29

I'm looking to try my hand at some low limit hold 'em in Atlantic City, but was wondering, generally speaking, when is the best time to play to encounter the most weak players?
Weekends I assume are the most busy, and probably have the largest percentage of casual players, but who plays on weeknights? Are you going to find mostly strong, regular players? And what about while theres a tournament going on? Sure theres alot of tables filled up, but would it be pretty safe to bet that most people there are going to be very good?
I know there's a tournament at the Taj in AC right now, and was wondering whether it would be a good idea to wait until the weekend or until its over before heading down.

Hi Bungus,

I'm from the AC area and there are three card rooms that will spread the games that you'd be looking to play. TheTaj, The Tropicana, and Borgata. The Tropicana will be much busier on the weekend as opposed to weekdays; as well as Borgata; but The Taj will be the busiest place of them all, and they will have some nice games for you to chose from. The Taj is "packed" on the weekends and that is when I would go if I were you. They spread so many lower limit games, and even though the room may be crowded, they have so many tables there to constantly open up new games, and I'd say about 1/3 of the room is filled with low limit games; hold-em and 7-card stud.

Yes, right now there is a tournament going on at the Taj and the room is busier than usual; but even when there isn't a tournament, you'll find some good games to get into. Weekdays are generally busier during the day and will definitely die out around midnight. On the weekends, the games will go around the clock! All games......all limits. I wouldn't worry about going during tournament time though.......you'll find plenty of players who you'd want to play against, I'm sure. You will see some well-known faces there if you come down this weekend but they will be playing either in the tournaments or at high limit games.

There's a tournament at Borgata as well. I'm pretty sure that it starts tomorrow but will only last for five days. The Borgata is PACKED on the weekends! I was there last week and I never got into a game and I had my name on four different lists! I waited for three hours before I decided to call it quits for the night and went home!! If you go to The Borgata on the weekend, MAKE SURE YOU GET THERE EARLY!!! This casino is the nicest one by far, but right now there's still a little chaos in the poker room so be prepared for 'that' as well. But once you get in a game, I think you'll really like it there.....it's nice.

The Tropicana also spreads low limit hold-em but they will definitely be busier on the weekends as well. Sometimes during the week you won't even find a low limt game there, so if I were you, either get there at anytime during the weekend, OR....if your interested in tournament play, then The Tropicana spreads them 6 days a week except Saturday. I think they spread hold-em games for as low as $2-4, up to $7.50-15.00. From my experience, the weaker players play at The Trop, (in general)...but the selection will definitely be at The Taj.

Your weakest opponents will show up more on the weekends, and holidays!

Good luck!!!

Hey, thanks for the timely response. I'll probably head over to the Taj or Trop this Friday then.
By the way, I've read some of your other post and would be interested in how long you've been playing, if you play at the City or if you mainly just play online like most of these cats.

Hi,

(Glad to help). I've been playing for about 10 years or so. I enjoy both live games and on-line poker, (preferably live though). 'You from NYC?
