7-card Stud Help....., verb2752, 16. Sep 2003 09:20

I like to play mixed game tourney's and I seem to really build my stack playing the holdem and Omaha Hi/Lo, especially Omaha H/L, which is rapidly becoming my favorite game.....but when 7-card Stud comes around I play too defensively and I hate myself for playing that way because I play the other two agressive when I get a hand. I have noticed that I am too tight with opening hands, especially as the limits increase, which is the time to steal some pots.

I feel like I am giving too much credit to the other players for hands & their hidden cards. I know I need more table experience with the game. Stud is a different strategy and mentality in regards ti the hands and I am not there yet in that area.

Any insight or techniques you use would be appreciated, I just started reading the section in Phil Hellmuth's book as well.... Thanks.

I would check out 7-card Stud for Advanced Players by David Sklansky and Ray Zee.

Hey verb,

I think Sklansky's book (co-authors Ray Zee-Mason Mallmuth), 'Seven Card Stud For Advanced Players' is a great stud book. Don't be fooled by its title though....it was the first poker book I ever read and it was very easy to grasp imo. I think if you read the book, you'll have a way better feel for the game as certain topics will definitely become more clearer for you. It really touches base on a lot of different areas. It's worth the read. Good luck.

Seven card stud is covered in most poker books and there are
a number of books devoted to this game. Check out your local
public library's website forn books on poker in the games
section (795). You can take these books out for free and make
copies of the section on stud if you need to. If you want to
hone your skills, you might consider Turbo Seven Stud from Wilson
Software.

The book "7 Card Stud: The Complete Course in Winning" by Ray West is very good. I also completed a book that was released last month called "How to Beat Low Limit 7 Card Stud Poker" that you can get at amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com or at the bookstore; it's geared specificly for low limit play.

The Sklansky book is great too and is on my shelf, only problem is it's really designed for higher limit games, so if you are planning on playing 10/20 or higher definitly get that one. Even if not, it's worth a read.

Regards,
Paul
