Should I have checked?, Michael C, 15. Sep 2003 15:28

Hi, This play cost me an extra $6. Any comments?

I was EP with AQ and the flop came down A72 rainbow. I bet and half the table folded. Turn was a 5 and I bet all folded but one player. River was and 8 and I looked to see if it was my turn to bet and said "just you and me?" and I bet. The Chinese lady got irate and repeated what I said and she said I thought you would check to me and raised me.

I looked at the board. A7258 and did not think she was on a st8 draw with that hand heads up. So, I called to see what she had and she showed a A8s. I had been watching what she played and mostly high cards and no st8 draws.

If I had quitely checked and called her bet then I would have saved $6 and if she checked (as she said she was going to) I would have saved $12 ?

You played this just right. She hit her three-outer on the river and out-drew you plain and simple. No way you could have put her on A8. Yours was a straight-out bet for value and you got unlucky.

I don't understand how she got offended though. You said "Just you and me?" and she got mad?!? Sounds like an act (although I can't understand her motivation, really).

P.S. After hitting two-pair on the river, there's no way she would have checked (unless she's an idiot). That situation is tailor made for a bet, or a check-raise.

Thanks mk, just wanted an opinion. She lost chips and left. We did not miss her. :-)

Hi Michael

I think you made the right decision.....If she didn't hit one of her three outs then you would have made $6....So that is 43-3 to gain a bet......and 3-43 to lose two bets....The odds were WAY in your favor.....Good choice :-)

ok just stating what i have seen in live casinos at lower limits here in So. Cal. first off think you made the right decision by betting, HOWEVER! by saying what you did the way you said it and when you said it, i think you also cost yourself $12. this is one of those bizarre strange wierd things about poker that defies all logic *you almost never have all the information you want*

from her reaction to your comments/bet i get the feeling that here was someone who was a recreational player who was there to have a good time and thought that your comment meant lets just show the cards and see who wins and not do any of that messy betting stuff *joke mine* and when you bet she got annoyed and decided to punish you since she had hit her hand.

this is almost a perfect example of the 2 different ways of dealing with other players, keep them happy, laughing, having a great time not minding losing or piss them off push them on tilt and try to get every last dime you can.

another example of this could be that strange table you find every so often where the table chops, you sit down and see that everyone is doing it and then you get dealt AA in the small blind, what decision do you make *not getting into what i think is right or not*

possiblities i see, what happened or you say nothing and bet she might have just called *yes i have seen people just call at lower limits with making 2 pair on river* save $6, or she raises and you save nothing but she isnt mad at you *good and bad* or lastly you say what you did and check and im pretty sure she would just check and showdown saving you $12

again let me say i think you made the right call by betting on the end, but i would advise against saying something like 'just you and me' the next time

Thanks Mark, I agree that I should have not said anything - good advice - I was not paying close attention to my right (my fault) and I wanted to make sure that the player on my right +1 had folded. It would have been better to pay attention (duh) and then just quietly bet. If I got raised I would still call.

This was a good learning experience. I prefer a happy table when I am winning.

BTW, I need to pickup my new glasses - It is hard to read the board unless I am seats 1,4,5,6 or 10. That will help my play.
